Comped and upgraded hotel rooms are not always all they're cracked up to be

On our vacation the last two weeks, we stayed at two different hotels in Las Vegas. Our first stay was at what I thought would be a fairly nice hotel because it was relatively new. The second stay was at a place I had stayed before.
Our first 2 nights were actually free because I used up some Comps on my casino card. We stayed at a fairly expensive place - they tried to get me to upgrade to a room that's normally $1,000/night and I'd only have to pay $130/night for it. I said no thank you, free works for me. So when we got to our room I noticed that the toilet wobbled. When you sat on it, you almost felt like it was going to fall over. And the toilet paper holder was halfway off the wall. I really thought that was kinda cheesy because it was supposed to be a nice hotel. I most likely wont stay there again.
The second 2 nights we were in Vegas, we were at a place I had stayed before and was relatively happy with. As we were checking in they wanted to see if they could find us a "nice" room. The woman checking us in really seemed pleased with herself because she got us a really good room, it was actually a "suite". Well, when we got up to it, it was nice - a suite means there's an extra little side-room with a writing desk and a reading chair. I was kinda disappointed though because the view was of the back end of the hotel. If I crained my neck I could see a little bit of the old strip, but mostly the view wasn't that great. It was a decent room though, better than the free one we got!
What's been your experience with comped/upgraded hotel rooms?

Most of my comps have been reasonable. Next week we're staying comped in one of the newly remodeled rooms at Excalibur. Looking forward to a more comfortable bed than my last stay there.
My best upgrade was at Aladdin - a suite with a view of Bellagio fountains.
sigh... I miss the Aladdin.

I have yet been to Vegas to gamble. I want to go soon. I have to talk my wife into it and have to find someone to care for my dad the time we are gone as well.

Casinocat - I've stayed at the Excalibur twice, that's the first placed I stayed at. It always looked dark to me, even the rooms. I hope they've brightened them up a bit. I do like it there though, we've always had a great time! I don't remember the Alladin, although I'm sure I've been in it because Planet Hollywood was new this trip, but I wasn't impressed with it. I guess they're not done with it yet?
Grandpa Bob - Vegas is great! I usually go to Atlantic City because it's a 3 hour drive and we can do a day trip if we have no free hotel going on. I'm glad I don't live closer or I'd be there all the time!!!

I stay in guest houses these days rather than fancy hotels. A high price does not always mean you will get great accommodation. Sometimes a horrible room will have an amazing view like it did for me in Lisbon and other times a lovely room will have a poor view like a brick wall. I like to have clean and comfortable accommodation with fresh looking bedding and a decent looking shower. I had an awful shower in a hotel in Paris. I stayed in a historic hotel in Germany and found it quite charming. In Sumatra there was a note on the wall about the bed having both bed bugs and fleas. I changed to another room and that had rats. Good luck with hotel rooms in the future.

I do know what you mean about the price not always fitting with the accomodations. It's usually just the name you're paying for. Depending on where we're going we stay at differnt places. Once when we went to Charlstown we stayed at a campground, that was fun!

When I get comped a room I always ask for a certain room. I usually get what I wish for most times if it is available. But then again I get comped free rooms at this casino twice a month so I am a regualr that they want back. That is why they treat me so good I reckon. Try asking for a specific room from now on that is in the range of what they offer for free. Usually they will homnor your request as much as possible at most casinos. They want their gamblers happy.

I know once I kept getting 2 free weeknights and I asked if I could get a free Friday OR Saturday and they switched it for me. I never though to ask for a specific room though... I haven't been going as often as I used to so my comps are pretty sad right now. But I hope to get back up to my "regular" visits again soon!!!
