New Language? Or misspelling constantly?  email this discussion to a friend?

Um, so apparently "spelt" isn't a word, as I finish typing the word, that little red squiggly line shows up underneath it, indicating it's an incorrect word. Or misspelling...That's a word though, correctly spelled out, misspelling.
Any words you can think of that always appears as the incorrect spelling, but you use frequently in your everyday speech and language?

You use the word "spelt", that is very bad grammar. The word would be spelled.

Off the top of my head, I can not think of a word that I use the when I type it out is marked as incorrect. However, I do sometimes use better grammar when I write things out than when I am speaking.

Oh, yes, I know it's bad grammar, also part of an example haha.
But I just got so used to using it, it doesn't quite sound "incorrect" to me yah know?

I can think of ya'll and ain't.

Mircosoft word (and a few other word processers/blog edits) seem to think I'm always misspelling my name (Megan).

the spell check here in myLot probably uses US english in spell checking. and if you are trying to type in the past and past participle of "spell" then you should use spelled if you don't want to see those squiggly thingy but that doesn't mean "spelt" is a wrong word or a misspelling nor a new language. it is just chiefly british past participle of spell.!! et?happythumbup

bad grammar yes, if you are in the US and not used to of the british language. but i wouldn't say that it is bad grammar, that just depends on the person who speaks with it or use it. that's why we have dictionary, in order to at least have a guide, you know.. but the so called experts have their own standards that they follow, so who are we going to believe? but let's no go deeper into that as not to stir something.happy

Spelt is a delightful grain which is often made into breads and cereals. It has nothing to do with writing.

Spelling is actually quite a new thing. Even when Shakespeare was writing, there was no such thing as a dictionary. People spelled things as they wished, and made up words if there wasn't one that worked just right. Intriguing ideas come from that fact. We make up names for characters. We make up settings that never existed. We quote conversations in our writing that never took place. Why not just extend that a bit, and make up words if we need them!?

If William Faulkner could establish Yoknapataphah County (might be misspelled) and its inhabitants, why couldn't he make words up to suit his literary needs?

Wow, really? didn't know that at all.
And yes, I've notice Shakespeare had his own type of language in itself hehe.
Thanks for the knowledge and Thanks for commenting!!

Thanks for the "best". This has been on my mind ever since you brought it up, and I've been sort of thinking up better names for things, since the storm outside has me stuck in the house. For example, there should be separate names for textbooks and books we read for pleasure. We need to stop calling manuals books, too.

When CDs replaced tapes and records, we continued to say artists had records coming out soon, but that's not sensible. There are so many ways in which the words we have are inadequate, we need to add words to the English language to clarify our communications!

I agree 100 percent! I think we should start developing a sort of new dictionary, based on the txt language or something of the sorts.
New slang and such.
There's most likely a site already created with this intention and invention.
oh well, we can at least start something on here right?

myLot reputation of 95/100. cobrateacher (4909)   ranked 776 out of 5,241 in writing  4 years ago

Of course. Eventually, these things make their way into dictionaries unless they're very short-term fads. But there are many slang dictionaries already, online and in the bookstores. Sorry if it's a disappointment!
