A Canadian Airline,Jazz, has for economy reasons decided to offload the lifevests from some of it's aircraft that fly transcontinental routes (ie,not so much over water) to save weight and thereby fuel...how much weight? about 25 kilos...the budget airlines around here have baggage allowances of 10 kilos per person..that doesn't sound like a lot of weight saved to Me..I'm not a big person, and I weigh near triple that..What do you think about the idea? If they're not going to be flying over water,I suppose a lifevest IS superfluous..the seat cushions that double as flotation devices will remain,though..
What else do you think could be done away with on inland flights?
thanks for responses!

Many airlines have a "side business" that means having more weight on the plane. They have an on board duty free shop. It offers little gadgets (not much weight) but also perfumes and liquors)
I have also seen in planes hand bagagge that seem to me a regular suitcase. And suitcases that are real monsters.

I don“t think anything that has to do with the safety of the passengers is superfluos. But luxuries for some of the passengers should be avoided.

I was thinking,if weight saving is at such a premium, how about thinking outside the box on duty free items? If You're only allowed to bring the item on board in a sealed bag,ie,it's not permitted to be consumed on the flight, why not set up bonded duty free areas Airside in the Destination airport where your stuff can be picked up on arrival with a voucher from the departure Airport's Duty free? The Passenger gets their duty free without the hassle of lugging it on board, the airports get the business, and the airlines have less to carry, and a lower fire hazard from fewer litres of alcohol sloshing around in the overhead bins..

If the Life vests only save 25 kilos on the average aircraft, would taking out all the "No Smoking" sign lightbulbs and replacing them with a sticker instead save a little?
