Fleaspraying your cats, OMG!...  email this discussion to a friend?

So it was time for the usual debugging, my critters hate it so I tried to keep the white and blue spray can out of sight for as long as possible...

I had no trouble with my two dogs, they followed me into the front hall without that much trouble and they were sprayed in about two seconds each. But now on to the fun part, at least, as a reader I guess it might sound fun... rasp.

One of my kitties was outside, sunbathing. She is the only one that doesn't leave the garden and therefor is entitled to going outside. Seems a bit unfair but we are working on a special kitty fence to hopefully they can all enjoy the garden soon.
The first spray was ok but then she ran away from me. I ran across the garden table (off course she is faster), strumbled on my knees through mud and half torn flowers hissing and pleaing for her to come back. It took me about 10 minutes to get the other sprays on. One down, three to go... jeez, my pants look like crap now!

Let's get on to the little misses, this will be a hand full. Sleeping on the boiler I pick her up, gently and as common as possible. Getting a good grip of her I start to spray her. She jumps up like a bunny in all kind of weird poses and I have to let go. She runs down the stairs and I run after her, allmost falling down trying to keep up. Once I actually have some good speed she runs back up passing through my legs. Arrrgh! Stupid cats... another good 15 minutes of running up the stairs and I can cancel my aerobics class...

Number three is my red cat, he is going to be huge load of trouble I though.
Spray, spray, some uncomfortable twirling and another spray... done.
What the...?

Last one, well this should be peanuts after the red one!
I ask my boyfriend to help as this is his cat, he gets a hang of them but when I spray him for the first time he freaks out, gets loose and runs all around the room, up and down the stairs and I try to chase him (usually I wouldn't but they mayn't lick themselves for a certain amount of time so I have to know where he's at). He took me a half an hour because he had found a way into the storage room in the attic and hid... we managed to do the last few sprays when he got out.

How do you prevent your pets from bugs?
Is it just as big a chase?

happyi use frontline from my vets to do my cats, it is simply a tube of liquid on the back of there necks once a month to keep them flea free, it is painless and does not stress my cats as i can do it wholst they are having a sleep on the settee without them even knowing, it is more expensive than flea sprays but is also a lot more effective

We use frontline too. My vet recommends it.

This spray is also made by frontline, funny you mention it happy.
We don't have good experiences with the tubes in their neck and this covers the whole animal. The spraying does stress them a bit more but the spray seems to work better or us as we kept having problems with the tubes. I don't know if it's because they try and lick it right away or something else, but it wouldn't give us the results we were hoping for.

My vet does recommend frontline, but not one specific method.

I use Frontline, too. I don't think the sprays work and I'd be afraid of getting it in their eyes or their breathing it. The Frontlike works for a month and is very easy to put on, as was said.

I use frontline as well but in the sprayform, it works better for me and can last up to 5 weeks if you apply it well. I was going for the funny side of the story here rather then discussing what product we use for preventing our cats getting all sorts of nasty bugs, but this is a nice discussion as well.
So you see, you never know where a discussion might be going wink.

Awww. poor kitty. We once had a cat with flea allergy and it can really be a pain. For the kitty itsself and to watch aswell, they really get aggitated and scabby like you say. All the best to your kitty!

Hi Cyberfluf, My cats have never had fleas and I put an amythest crystal into their water bowl, it doesn't harm the cats but it gives their skin a taste that fleas don't like. Garlic and citronella works too. Huggles. Ellie :D

myLot reputation of 98/100. cyberfluf (2897)   ranked 57 out of 5,816 in cats  4 years ago

Thanks for the great tips, I am going to get an amythest for them happy.
I have heard about the garlic before, but the amythest and citronella are new to me. I will surely try it and get back to you on it!

Thanks for the best response, I have found it works for me, you can use it in the dogs bowl too and it has the same effect and once you have the crystal saves money from expensive chemical sprays. Ellie :D

HAHAHAHAHAA...oh what a story that was Cyberfluf! I can relate to that, I have a lil girl named Bijoux, and she has LONG hair and somehow we got fleas in the apartment, from a buddy that brought her dog for a visit. I tried the spray and she took off like I was trying to poison her. I chased her all around the apartment and almost killed myself in the process...it was so tramatic for her that to this DAY if there is any "spray" sound happening she is off like a bat out of hell and you will never get her out from behind the sofa. Sooo what do I do with this one...? I got the kind of flea meds that are little oil capsules that you open up an slowly pour into the place between their shoulder blades, and gently rub it in....THAT I could do and it worked GREAT. I thnk Harts makes it. There are several brands that make that sort of med for them...hope this helps!

myLot reputation of 98/100. cyberfluf (2897)   ranked 57 out of 5,816 in cats  4 years ago

LOL... yes, it's a great way to get exercise that's for sure!
I have tried the capsules but they don't work that well for me, or I have never got the right ones I don't know for sure. The fact that their body totally absorbs it scares me aswell because it does get into their blood stream and such.
When you spray them it stays more on the surface. Plus the fleas have to bite first before they die when you use capsules, right?

myLot reputation of 97/100. Kashigurl (1166)  4 years ago

I've not had problems with the flea afterwards, but we didn't have an infestation or anything. It worked great for us. It didn't cause any problems for Bijoux and she has sensitive skin. I guess every cat is different too....what might work for one might not for another...they are little individuals.
