I've been reading a lot about the possibility of David Tennant leaving the show after doing four specials and then regenerating into another actor.
He's been so popular, I was wondering how other people felt about the possibility and who some of the contenders should be to replace him. It can't just be anybody. Let's face it, the Doctor is that important.

I think we are also running out of future doctors.
In one of the films, they made a great big thing about how Time Lords only have 13 lives (12 regenerations), I'm sure David Tennant is the tenth, so we only have a few left!
I honestly believe this doctor is the best one to date, my favourite from the old days was Peter Davison.
In fact, when I thought he was dying and regenerating, I was so upset and remained so until the next episode when he got rid of the energy into his hand.
I can't think of any actor who would do a better job than the current one. Nope, not one.

Well, it looks like David is in talks to come back for Series 5, so, fingers crossed.
But I'm glad you brought that up, I remember the same thing. So, I don't know if it's going to be forgotten, or if they will stick with it. I hope that whichever they choose, they find a way to keep the series running. Doctor Who is one of those shows which has stood the test of time. It's adaptability is mind-bending.
BTW, I also liked Peter Davison. It was cool that Peter's daughter played the Doctor's daughter. I liked that.

Oh yes, I read that about Peter Davison's daughter playing the Doctor's daughter, and then apparently that they are going out now!

Yeah, they supposedly are, but that just feels a little odd to me. Sort of too close to home, you know. But then I have a crush so I probably don't want him dating anybody. :)

I think David is marvelous and I can't imagine anyone else being the doctor at this point in time. That being said, I rather liked Eccleston too and was sad when he left. I think Tennant brings something More to the role though, a certain endearing quirkiness. I know he doesn't write the lines, but he delivers them with spot-on timing and inflection. "Am I ginger? I always wanted to be ginger." I love that. Or the bit about the fighting hand after his hand gets cut off. He is just excellent.
It would take a truly special actor to take his place.

I loved Eccleston. I liked the whimsy and dark depth he gave the role. When Tennant took over, I missed his predecessor. However, it only took one episode to make me say Christopher who? Fickle, I know.
You're right about David's ability to make the role his own. I've heard him perform Shakespeare and had seen him before in "Viva Blackpool" and the like. He brings that unique talent to any role he tackles, but something special happened when he became the Doctor. In some ways, I think his Doctor is like Tom Baker's. They cannot be replaced and for this generation, David Tennant will personify the Doctor, just as Tom Baker personified him for the 70's.
It's interesting that both actors adopted brown coats from which they seem to be able to draw anything they need at the requisite moment. However, I prefer David's glasses for Tom's scarf.
And as a digression, I loved it when the Master offered a "jellybaby" to his wife. Had me laughing so much I had to hit pause.

Oh my gosh! When the master started singing in that one episode, I was enthralled! I had to go find it on youtube and watch it repeatedly.

There are several other versions too, but this one seems best.

So far, David has said he isn't leaving, but that the Beeb hasn't asked him back yet. I think Moffett wants him back and will ask him, it will rather depend on what David wants to do after doing Shakespear.
I think David is doing a wonderful job, you are right, it can't be just anybody. I just hope its someone who will love the job as much as David has.

I can't imagine him not being asked back. I don't know the exact numbers, but Doctor Who (the brand) hasn't seen this much success in a long time. It would be ridiculous for them to ignore the appeal of David. As for whether he'll want to come back, I think he enjoys the role. He's living a childhood dream. I just hope the crazy fans don't make it a nightmare.
