Does Percocet really work?

I recently had surgery and am now taking the drug. However, the drug does not take away all the pain. In fact, it takes off a very small part of the edge of the pain. Now, I am having some severe pain, but a simple motrin pill knocked out my pain for over an hour. Motrin is something I can get over the counter. Are doctors just quick to prescribe these strong drugs, with such strong side effects as percocet?

Percocet makes the walls move for me. It literally makes the walls more. Not that's fun, not! I need painkillers now because of my knee injury circa three weeks ago. I am now taking vicodin (not sure of spelling). That works way better for me.
