I have to find homes for my fur babies!

I am at a loss as what to do. I have seven cats. I know, its too many. But I'm a sucker for strays. The problem is I have severe asthma with COPD and I'm now using oxygen at night. My family and Doctor insist I find homes for at least four or five of them. The problem is several of them are around 8 years old and everyone wants kittens. I've put my name on a waiting list for a local no-kill shelter but I've been told the wait is long. I'm fighting to breathe at times, and I may even have to move soon due to my health issues. I am going to make up flyers this weekend to post in various places in town, but I don't know how good that will work. And how do I know my much loved babies will find a good home with an owner that will keep them inside and care for them properly? I've even thought I may have to have several put to sleep if I can't find them homes, but how do you make that kind of choice? The shelters here are full and don't take any more. What would you do if you were in this kind of situation? I know my health is important, but my love of my pets is also.

Hi Tess
I just went through something similar. Honey, it's your life or theirs. Take them to a shelter if need be. You are suffering by worrying what to do. This worrying will bring on an atack as quickly as anything. The pain is going to be there, no matter what you do. Is there a friend or family member who can help by taking them for you?
My little mini doxie was shaking constantly and my husband suffers from severe asthma since he was 3 and also has copd. I too was afraid I had to find another home. He's been my baby boy from birth for 9 years. I was devastated. We finally took him to the vet and she said he had an ear infection. As soon as I began treating him he almost completely stopped the shaking. My husband and I were so relieved!! Then 3 to 4 days later someone started poisoning him a little at a time. I thought he was having an epileptic seizure. He's had them in the past. It was different though. The fourth day he was paralyzed and I grabbed him up and we rushed him to the vet. That's when she told me he had been poisoned, there was no hope. My heart was crushed and so was my husbands. That was Thursday. I'm still in shock.
Sweetie, don't make yourself suffer any longer than necessary because there will be more to come afterwards. My heart goes out to you.xoxoxoxoxo

I'm so sorry for the loss of your little dog. I know how hard it is. We also have a german shepherd that was born with some health problems. The vets told us he would live to be 5 to 7 years old. He just turned 7 last month. But, his health is getting worse so we may have to have him put down soon too. So I may be losing alot of pets at once soon. Its going to be a big change. Thanks for your reply.

Oh how sad. I know this is very hard on you having to do this. I am not sure what I would do in your case. If I had to get rid of my cat it would break my heart, she has been with us for over 14 years now. I know you don't have family here so that is out of the question. Have you ask any of your neighbors? I would hate to see you have to put any to sleep only because of no place for them to live and having to get rid of some. Have you called any other no-kill shelters that are around you but not in your town?

I managed to find a home for one of the cats with a neighbor. That was when I had 8. Now I still have 7. I haven't located any other no kill shelters yet, but I'm still trying. Thanks for the reply.

My four cats are all indoor/outdoor cats. If yours became that way that would be the same as having one half as many cats in the house.

Yes, I've thought of Petfinder. I've received responses not only from myLot, but on another board I belong to as well. And I'm now determined to be very careful in where they go. Several have warned me that not everyone plans to treat a free pet as a pet, so I'll be careful who they go to. Thanks for the reply.

Check with your local Pet Smart They might have the number of a place that can help you take to. With your Health the Shelter should have taken them.
I know how you feel about the cats, I have 18. I have been trying to get rid of them too. I have been able to give away 7 so far. It's been very hard because I have fallen in love with every one of them.
I am sorry that I couldn't help you any more then that. I don't know how to get in touch with the SPCA that they show on TV that rescues animals when people can't take care of them any more or when they have been neglected.
Good Luck and Please take care of your self. God Bless

Thank you for your reply... its good to hear from others who love cats as much as I do. Besides my seven of my own I also feed the strays outside and get them fixed with discount coupons as I can catch them. I'd have more if I had the space, money and health to deal with it all. But I don't.
