Yo-yos, two meanings, two crafts, do you do either one?

Wood workers and found object people might make the wooden or plastic yo-yos that people play with.
Cloth workers, fabric designers, recycled and homey craft workers might make the clother yo-yos. Small circles cut out, sticed 1/4 inch or so from the edges, gathered, and flattened to make discs to sew either together or onto something.
So do you make either of those? Buy and use either of those (both kinds are pre-made now, so you can just buy and use them)? Do you sell them or just make them for personal use?

I do the cloth yo-yos. They are fun to make. Versatile. You can do just about anything with them. I sell yo-you coasters in my Etsy shop.

Nice picture, thank you.
How are you doing with sales so far?

I think they're cute. I gave your picture a plus. I hope you get a sale soon.
Some of the material I use seems to be fraying. I think some material is better than others for this. Thanks and take care.

I made wooden yo-yos at summer camp when I was six or seven, but I never achieved anything close to what a good wood worker can do!
I also went through a phase where I made tons of cloth yo-yos from scraps out of my mother's craft basket.
I don't have any use for them now, but it certainly was something fun to keep my hands busy.

Interesting, you've done both types. Cool. Yo-yos of the cloth type are being used to decorate things like hearts and so on. I really wish I had been able to do wood work when I was younger. I did get a little of it when I took an arts and crafts class in college. Mostly thin wood for jewelry. Sounds like your were good at cloth yo-yos. Sounds like you have had some experience with wood working, too. I'm surprised that I found someone who did both and was the first responder, too. Thanks and take care

I was never very co ordinated with the toy yo yo. I have made yo yos from fabric and decorated items with them. I have been thinking about them a lot lately. I would like to be doing some more "homey" crafts, that I have not done in a long time. I have tons of fabric to use in crafts. It really would cost me very little.

That's what is great about them. You can use scraps, rags, fabric you've collected. I have a couple of prints and the yo-yos come out so neat!
I was never very good at the toy either, but some people are wonderful. Do you remember the Smother's Brothers? They had the champ on their show and they made a video of different kinds of ways to play with the yo-yo. The silly brother was actually pretty good at using and playing with a yo-yo.

I don't but my husband does..He has made many different yo-yo's, even a small one for my son..Playing with yo-yo's relaxes him and since he is out of work at this time, he has the time to make them..

We had someone up here start out making one old-time toy and people wanted them. So he made and sold them. Then he researched more old-time toys, made them, sold them. Now he has a part-time business making old time toys. He loves it. He demonstrates and sells them at craft shows and museums. You never know what a hobbie will lead to. Thanks and take care.

Really?? I wonder if my husband could do something like that..We know someone who could no longer work and started making birdhouses and wooden outdoor decorations, but I don't think he made that good of money at it..Maybe I should discuss this with him, thanks..

This guy was the only one making old time toys in the area, so it worked well for him. But I also think he was just supplementing a retirement income. So it was like a part-time job. But the joy in that man's face, the parents of the kids, and the kids. Absolutely precious.

I don't do any woodworking but I did buy my husband a wood working tool one time. I think it was an electric carving thingy of some sort. He'd said he was interested in learning about that, but I don't think he's done much with it. He's got it out in the garage and I do think that someday, he'll get the thing out and work with it one day.
I've never heard of "clother yo-yos." I don't even know what that is. What are they used for? It sounds like a clothing decoration of sorts. Pretty interesting, I must say. Boy, I sure learn alot on myLot! Thanks, writersedge.
