Peticure (nail trimmer) Product Review |
| |
| I'm sure you've seen the "Peticure" advertised on tv. The ad claims that it's the ONLY way to properly trim your pets nails so you don't hurt them. Since I do my own grooming on my dogs, I know all the tools used in grooming (I also work in a kennel that does grooming). I've seen nail grinders used on dogs thousands of times and knew what to expect, so I ordered the Peticure. It took about 2 months for it to get here, and then I had to put together some of it. There were 2 sets of instructions. One looked more like an advertisement, the other was a small white paper that looked like an instruction sheet- which I used to guide me into putting this thing together. So, it's together, and I use it on my Weimaraner first- it wasn't working right. I fooled with it for about an hour, and went back to the instruction sheet- the little white sheet that I used wasn't ALL the instructions. It just told PART of the instructions- I had to use the paper that looked like an advertisement- that had ALL the instructions. Why two sets of instructions with one set only having part of the instructions? I have no idea, but it was a major pain in the rear. Yes, the peticure does work, and it does grind the nails down. However, if one were to try to use it for the ONLY nail grooming tool, they'd have to use it daily. What I do is clip my dogs nails with regular dog nail clippers, THEN use the peticure to file the rough edges down. I would never consider it as a replacement for clipping nails. The "guard" on it is the best feature- it help to make sure that your dog's hair doesnt get caught up in the moving parts- which is very important for hairy breeds. For those of you with a regular dremel- they do sell the guard seperatly and they fit on dremels. So you'd only have to pay $20, rather than the $65 that I spent on the whole setup. Keep in mind that I'm not at all saying this is a bad product, just that it isn't quite as they advertise- but yet, what is? lol | | | | | |

| | I also ordered this product. I was really upset at how long it took to arrive. The assembly didn't take much, I didn't think. I also have a top of the line dremel. Sure, I love it but it's a major pain when you have to worry about where your aiming that thing with no protective guard and a squirming dog. I raise and show dogs so I have many dogs to do and I don't always have help in holding them. I do NOT believe in using regular nail trimmers. In fact, the info you see on the tv commercial came mostly from an article I wrote about 2 yrs ago. I was really upset by that. The product designer and I got into it a couple times. He commented on my article to advertise his up and coming product and asked if I'd offer a mention of it in my dog breeding book. I told him no way. At that time, he was not intending to use a sanding drum but a grinding stone. Stones get hot fast and hurt the dog. He fixed that and asked if I'd test it and then offer mention in my book. I told him yes. He never sent it. He just wanted to advertise his trimmer on my article, which was quite popular. But all that said and done... I still like mine. It's not near as powerful as my dremel but I knew by the rpm's that it wouldn't be. But I LOVE that guard!! And no, he's not getting a mention in my book. ;-P LOL | | | | | | |

| | My main issue with the product is that they're marketing it towards the general pet owner- who are typically not as willing to moniter their dogs nail growth. If you are one to keep up on grooming/nail care, then using the product alone may work. But as I said, it's geared toward the common pet owner, and it's a rare day when I see a pet with the proper nail length- so using the peticure alone will not work for them. Show dogs are worked on a great deal- and the owners/handlers that I've seen have really kept up on the nails. I've never been to a show and seen dogs with their nails curling lol | | | |

| | I thought the $30.00 they are asking now was ridiculous. $65 is outrageous!!! Question for both of you...would it work on cat claws or does it make too much noise??? | | | |

| | I did think about getting one but I'm not sure if it's a good product or not.I'll probably just stick with clipping. The dog's fine with it.It does look impressive on the commercial for it.Thanks for sharing the information about it. | | | | | | |

| | If we had that at my clinic, it would be impossible to use on the "difficult" nail trims. It's hard enough just being able to hold the paw still! | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for the review. It's good to have a better idea before plunging :) I always thought that I might still have to use the nail clipper and then use the petticure. I odn't mind that. It's just that I don't want to cut too much, it's hard to see on tazz so I rather be on the safe side. | | | | | | |
