I'm taking a basic oil painting class and I don't mind using the oil paints but I really really hate cleaning the brushes. Has anyone else had a problem cleaning their paint brushes? Can you suggest somehow to clean them more easily?

I've used oil paints for a long time and it doesn't really bother me when it comes to cleaning the brushes! Just leave them on the turps after use, get another container of clean turps to clean them brushes and VOILA! Just make sure you don't let them dry as your brushes won't be any good!

hi kitten...i've read that first when you are painting, between changing colors wipe as much paint out of the brush as possible, then dip your brush in solvent. then when you are completely finished painting. again get all the paint that you can out of the brush and then use paint thinner to clean. then it was recommended to wash your brushes in lukewarm water and bar soap thoroughly rinsing the soap out. and then protect your brushes wrapping them in paper towels or plastic wrap.

That's actually how we clean our brushes now. I just hate how long it takes to clean each brush. I feel too as if I don't clean them well enough. I should take more time to clean them then.

My wife has an extensive brush collection, I do the same with mine when I paint with oil. Allow one hour at room temperature before using.

We take the brush and wrap it in plastic wrap and then throw them in the freezer.
That way you need not worry about getting all pigment from the bristles. Put a small mark of paint on the wrap to make it easy to distinguish the colors of the brushes.

We use thinner and let them soak if we have mixed colors. Let them soak overnight in one jar and then after swishing them around, switch to another jar with fresh thinner, allow them to air dry before putting the protective tip back on.

Over the years, it has been the best way to take care of oil brushes. Some of our brushes are over twenty years old.

Good luck with that K1tten

Wow, I've never heard of doing that at all. I'm amazed your brushes have lasted that long also! I'll have to think about doing that when I have my own space to paint in. I'm using an area given to the students by the school so I don't have a chance to clean them that way. Thanks for the tip though!
