Cigarettes to bear the SDPC watermark | | In a bid to counter contraband cigarettes, the Singapore government is going to impose a regulation that all licensed cigarettes in Singapore to bear the "SPDC" mark. SPDC meaning Singapore Duty Paid Cigarettes.
I first heard of this news over the radio on my commute home. Initially I thought it was a joke. That is till I saw the news later in the evening.
What caught my attention is this "Anyone found buying, selling or smoking cigarettes without the "SDPC" marking could be jailed or fined."
Wow... So come January first, there is going to be officers walking around checking on the butt that is in your mouth to see if it bears the SDPC marking. If not, they are going to haul your sorry butt to the court to charge you for buying and smoking contraband cigarettes.
"According to the Tobacco Association (Singapore), contraband cigarettes constitute 18 per cent of market share in Singapore.
It expects the new regulation to increase demand for duty—paid cigarettes, which would help offset the cost of marking every cigarette."
Wanna bet to see if they do not increase the price of cigarettes? I am sure they will find some excuse later to justify for the price increase.
Some of the articles can be found here: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20080910/tap-973-every-cigarette-bear-sdpc-markin-231650b.html http://938live.sg/portal/site/938Live/menuitem.43735da1634c4377d21b2910618000a0/?vgnextoid=71d52674c9a4c110VgnVCM1000001f0aa8c0RCRD&mcParam=18d2638896593110VgnVCM100000e101000aRCRD http://www.customs.gov.sg/topNav/new/SDPC+Cigarette+Marking+Regulation.htm
In fact, after the announcement of this new regulation, the radio stations are abuzzed with lots of people talking about it. I wonder how many people is going to get fined for this come January. I also wonder how much of my tax payer money is going into deploying enforcement officers to check on smokers who are smoking non SDPC marked cigarettes. Imagine the raids they would have to make on a daily basis on all the night joints!
Sigh...

Come January 2009, all cigarettes MUST bear the SD |

They are going a little too far in stopping ple from buying contraband cigrattes, and they din think about those foreigners or even those foreign construction workers, with the price of singapore cigarette on the rise, and with their pay, how can they afford.. Then now with this stupid ruling, does that mean that if i were to buy my cigarettes from overseas, and i did declare it to the customs, paid the tax, i will have to carry the receipt with me to wherever i go?? and once the officers check me, do i have the right to THROW THE RECEIPT on their face and tell them i GOT PAY TAX?? lol
Luckily, i have quitted smoking but i also know that cigarattes is gonna icnrese price again, and this time, it's gonna be a dollar or more.. How i pity all those smokers..

kun2349 (7264) | 1 year ago | yeah, and like what lordwarwizard says, if there are ple whom buy alot of cigarettes to stock up at home b4 the increase of price, will sure kena caught, because the government will never believe that all smokers are not hardcore smokers, and when the officers catch them, the offenders are always wrong no matter how right and valid their reasons are.. lol
Yeah, i'm one of them.. Because my fitness far surpasses most non smokers, and as a smoker in the past, i'm able to run and climb and jump, easily without any problems, as compared to some non smokers, i guess alot of them are not even half of my fitness.. lol=D And being smoker, i have not taken any mc for almost 5 yrs too.. SO am i consider as a healthy smoker?? haha
But now i have quitted smoking, still i'm healthy.. haha

ahgong (3789) | 1 year ago | Precisely. I mean, are we churning out too many policemen and policewomen that they are all having nothing better to do than to go around and check on people's cigarettes?
I am wondering, which wise butt scholar came up with this idea. And which other wise butt scholar approved this idea to implement it. I wonder what kind of hide-and-seek is going to happen between the ah peks and the authorities when the new rule is implemented.

ahgong (3789) | 1 year ago | If the failures are on the customs department, then they should be bringing the customs department up to task. Rather than try to implement such a ruling. No? Kinda like punishing the general public for the failure of one department. No?
I am not a smoker myself. But I do buy them for my father from time to time. And it is getting more and more painful on the pocket each time I do.
I am sure with this new ruling in place, a lot of night spots are going to be raided on a regular basis to collect fines.

ahgong (3789) | 1 year ago | Well, with this new implementation, instead of discouraging the smokers from smoking, it will only encourage them to look for alternatives.
What you will most likely to see is, more smokers will turn to rolling out their own ciggies with tobacco and paper. IMHO, those smoking the rolled tobacco are the stinkiest! As it is, the cigarettes are already not pleasant to smell when the smokers are smoking it. Those cheap tobacco which can be used to roll home-made cigarettes are going to be worse!
If a person is determined to smoke, no amount of enforcement is going to help in preventing them from doing it. No?

The cigarette police he said. I am curious what happens to those that roll their own or is that not allowed in your country???

ahgong (3789) | 1 year ago | That is precisely what I am thinking as well. What is to prevent people from buying the boxed cigarettes to use those rolled ones instead? How are they going to trace those?
I find this new exercise a little, well, what is a better word here... ridiculous! But it is also making me interested to find out, what innovative ideas are the smugglers going to come up with when the new regulations are in place.

eeyore39 (3181) | 1 year ago | The smugglers probably have already purchased their own seal machine from a corrupt official. Not that you have any over there right?? Probably got it through the states.

Sigh~ Cigarettes are already expensive enough and now the government wants to impose this! BAd news I thought it was all a joke until I went into the links that were provided by you, and I realised that one of these links points to the customs website. So, it's all very true!
I'm a smoker myself and I do buy Malaysia cigarettes because of the fact that I go into Malaysia often. So does this serve to mean that as long as you do not buy those with the stamp, you will have to pay the tax at the customs and show the receipt everytime the officers come to check on the butt that you are smoking? This is all but ridiculous! Don't they have enough just raising the tax to be on every single stick of cigarette?
What the government is doing is not discouraging the smokers at all as if someone who wants to smoke will still smoke regardless of what the government imposed on cigarettes. It's all about the money that the government wants to gain. Afterall, they can just ban cigarettes in Singapore if they really do want to stop people from smoking! Besides that, the government had just mentioned in the customs webpage that contraband cigarettes holds a 18% market share in Singapore. They want to hold solely to 100% of the market share, and now they implement this ruling.
And coming to think about it, the cost price of 1 pack of cigarette is around $1 per pack, which means to say that the government is earning roughly around $10 plus per packet of cigarette sold. Not such a bad deal if you ask me.
I guess it's more trips to Malaysia for me, not that I am complaining though. Lol, I won't bring the cigarettes back into Singapore, but whatever free time I have on hand would be spent in Malaysia when this ruling comes into effect. No more eating dinner in Singapore! Off work, and off I zoom to Malaysia to rest, relax, makan and smoke before I come back into Singapore again! Any other smokers stand with me on this? Let's stand united and not let the government profit on this!

ahgong (3789) | 1 year ago | Oh c'mon! Like that is going to make a difference!
What I find ridiculous with this rule is that they are going to be scrutinizing every stick of cigarette that you smoke. And if you were to say buy a pack in Malaysia and bring the few unsmoked sticks back, you need to have a receipt to proof that you purchased. Wear it like a badge, you know.
I mean, the authorities have nothing better to do? I am just going to see what kind of antics the people are going to get up to once the new rule is applied come January.
