I'm just trying to get a general view on what people think of the recent Star Wars trilogy. Part of me thinks what was the point seeing as we knew the ending? And another part of me thinks I quite liked seeing some decent saber fights...
So... do you think we really need them? Or was it just a way for Lucas to experiment with CGI and make more money?

I think the stories did develop Anakin/Darth Vader, but it didn't help that the writing for them was really, really bad. It would have been much better if Lucas' writing skills hadn't degenerated

For someone who loves all Star Wars movies dearly, I think the prequels were important in understanding the entire saga like how Darth Vader came to be and how he was tempted by the dark side.
Of course, the answer to your second question: yes. all movies are geared towards making money, after all. Lol.

Personally that is a hard question to answer,I love the Star Wars movies and they will always bee my favorite movies, and I am glad that they made the first three, because it lead up to what happens in the last three, even though they should have made the beginning first,so I kind of think that George Lucas just wanted to make some extra money, and experiment when making the first three, and I have heard rumors that they are going to make Episodes VII,VIII,IX but I am not sure if there are any truth to the rumors or not.

I liked Episode 2 and 3. Episode one was a bit too childish but it had some story content to it. I liked how the story unfolded from episode 1 to 3. Even if we already knew the ending, I think it was pretty cool how they reached that ending. I also liked how they showed how Palpatine manipulated everybody and everything so that he could rise to power.

I also have mixed feelings on the topic. I liked watching more of the story unfold and thought it was great to see the early days of Anakin. However, I felt like there was too much CGI just for the sake of using CGI. I also thought the acting coach/director was terrible, because it seemed like several actors that have delivered brilliant performances over the years were just overacting and way over the top in those movies. I did think Ewan McGregor was awesome as Obe Wan Kenobi. Overall, the original 3 movies are still some of my favorites ever, so it's hard to compare anything favorably after those!

Yeah, while I loved the original trilogy dealing with the Rebel Alliance fighting the Empire more, I did still enjoy the prequels dealing with how the Empire came to be and how Anakin fell to the Dark Side and became the villain we all know.
Even though we all knew how it would go, I still enjoyed the story getting there. I loved being able to see how all of it played out. I loved being able to get the 'backstories' for some of the characters as they happened. Mainly because, at least for me, it added a lot more to the characters in the original trilogy. Such as some of the dialogue with Obi-Wan in ANH took on even more meaning when he talked about Anakin and how he had been a great friend (or something like that, it's been a long time since I saw ANH).

I wouldn't say we NEED any film.
but I love the Star Wars films, old and new (altough much of Phantom Menace annoys me hugely. mostly that whiny kid. which just shows, like father like son, eh)
I think the original films were not untouchable, like some people would think. I just think that it depends on your generation. I'm sure children now love the new star wars films as much as children did the original films. but as adults, with the old films we have this little thing called Nostalgia, which we can never have about the new ones. and that's what makes the old films better to most people.
both trilogies have clunky dialogue, moments of truly terrible acting, and merchandise geared characters.
but they're greater than the sum of their parts
