Barcelona hammered Sporting Gijon 6-1 in El Molinon to earn their first win of the Liga season.
Pep Guardiola's side were on top from the start but it took 27 minutes to open the scoring, the incisive Andres Iniesta delivering an inch-perfect cross for the diving Xavi to head inside the far post.
Six minutes later it was two. Captain Carles Puyol rose to meet a Xavi corner and send it spinning towards the far top corner where Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o arrived to make sure with his own head. Jorge, with an own goal, Iniesta and Messi twice completed the score, while Maldonado managed the only goal for Gijon.
Barcelona, who had previously suffered their worst start to a season for 35 years - a point from the opening two matches - under new coach Guardiola, looked back to their best.
It's a relieving victory for Barcelona, who really needed to get back on track before playing the strong clubs of La Liga.

Pep Guardiola would be a relieved man. His head was on the chopping block for most of the last two weeks. This week has given him some respite with wins in the La Liga and Champions League. The win against Gijon is probably an indication of things coming back to track or probably just another statistic as Gijon looks very likely to go down again this year!!
Cheers!

That's true, Gijon is a team to beat by most of the La Liga teams, but Numancia isn't much better either, and they still won against Barcelona.
It's a good thing Barca won against Real Betis, let's see what they can do in the Catalan derby tonight, that's a tough match!
