A Town Named Obama?

"Motorists entering the quaint, woodsy town of Olema near the sea in Marin County may notice a subtle change as they enter: it appears the burg's name has been changed to "Obama." Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama supporter and bed-and-breakfast owner Kelly Emery created a perfect mirror of the green sign people read as they enter the town's limits. Now people unfamiliar with the area may think they are entering the town of Obama, population: 55. [UPDATE: After complaints from locals, who said the sign was confusing, a county official persuaded Kelly Emery to remove the sign. " I found this on my AOL homepage. I think it is ridiculous. Why were the locals complaining? They should know what town they live in. I don't see a problem with the sign. It is no different from any other political sign. What do you think?

Population of 55, wow. is there really such a town still? I think they should not have any complaints, don't they know where they live?

That's what I was thinking. It is ridiculous to be so worked up about a sign!

Political signs should look like political signs, and not like the town limits signs. Political signs need to be set apart from the rest of the signs in the town so as not to confuse residents, and people passing through. I can understand why people were confused and why the sign had to be removed.

The locals are complaining because it is against the law to put up political signs within 45 days of an election. The woman is not exercising free speech, she is bullying her neighbors, who may have more respect for their community and for the law than she does. She is making sure her voice is heard while that of the people who obey the law are silenced. Of course they know what town they live in, and it is not the one listed on the phony and offensive sign. If someone put up an illegal sign renaming the town McCain, this woman would go on the warpath. Further, did you ever drive on a road where pranksters turned a sign perfectly around so that it read something like "next gas 2 miles" and it was really 26 miles in the other way. Do they consider when they do that that someone from out of town could think a gas station was just up the street and go hopefully on and on until they ended up stranded out in the middle of nowhere? What do I think? I think it is inexcusable and she should be prosecuted.

I think it is funny. But people are picky. And even a minor temporary change can be upsetting. I agree it is no different than another political sign. Maybe they just don't want to be associated with Democrats? Who knows.
