Green your coffee

This was an interesting article: Americans are going green in many ways, but when it comes to coffee, they’re still in the dark. According to a new independent survey, 67 percent of consumers who frequent coffee shops admit to discarding their used paper cups into a trash can. That’s 28 billion cups (100 million pounds of paper) every year that end up in landfills. That’s why home-brewed coffee is such a powerful alternative. Cutting out just one of those typical lattes each day and replacing it with a premium coffee you brew yourself will have a positive impact on the environment and your wallet. The surprising results of the new study have become the foundation for Good Earth Coffee’s ‘Brew at Home’ Pledge campaign. Good Earth is encouraging coffee drinkers to lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle and brew their coffee at home. To help inspire coffee lovers to make this change, Good Earth will donate $1.00 for each online pledge they receive to The Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit environmental organization. To sign the pledge online, visit www.goodearthcoffee.com. Additionally, I've created some simple eco-coffee tips that will help all of us put more green in our morning cup. Do you think you can do this? I'm sure going to try.

There are choices other than just drinking coffee at home. From starbucks to AM/PM they offer tumblers for coffee, first refill is free. And I do not believe they care if you bring your own tumbler.

The Starbucks that my son works at also takes 10 cents off the cost if you bring in your own Starbucks mug.

I should be more clear, I know they have tumblers but for sure AM/PM will give you the first refill with the purchase of your tumbler. I have bought coffee with tumblers at starbucks, I kinda remember having free coffee there too but I do not know if it is going on right now. I have a few tumblers from starbucks and one from am/pm. I think that people going to buy coffee out is a nice thing to me. People work in those places, it can be a cheap date. Another good idea will be to place a bin for cups in coffee shops, just like big markets have a bin for plastic bags.

I guess I'll try this as well. I really want to help make our world a better place to live in. I already have my coffee maker back home, just waiting for me to fill it up with coffee granules I bought from the market. Though I rarely go to coffee shops, I think I won't have to because of this.

I usually make coffee at home every morning. I don't drink coffee much, but when I do, it is normally what I make at home. Occasionally, when I am out and about, I will stop and get one somewhere, but if I do that, I usually take a mug with me instead of getting the paper ones from the place.

Shelly, I have a travel mug on top of the fridge. I usually go through the kitchen to the front door. So, I just reach up and grab the mug on my way out. Some times I use it, sometimes I don't. Either way, it goes back in the house and gets washed and put back on top of the fridge for next time. It is just a part of my leaving the house routine.
