American Hunters & Shooters Association in support of Obama email this discussion to a friend?

I recently returned from visiting family up north where I heard the following radio ad played on several Washington, D.C. and Virginia radio stations. I wonder why the NRA feels it must create a monster who will strip us of our second amendment rights while the AHSA is able to acknowledge that both candidates will protect those rights? Below is the text to the ad:

Barack Obama: I'm Barack Obama, candidate for president, and I approved this message.

Ray Schoenke: This is Ray Schoenke. I played football with the Washington Redskins. Now I'm president of the American Hunters and Shooters Association. It's important to me that our next President protects our Second Amendment rights to own guns and defend ourselves.

Barack Obama and John McCain will both make sure we can keep our guns.

But what about keeping our jobs?

Barack's got a real plan that invests in creating jobs here at home and cuts taxes a thousand bucks for working families.

John McCain?

I saw a lot of cheap shots in my day...

But McCain's false attacks on Obama are just a fake to hide the ball. His plan sells out American workers.

McCain will keep giving tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas.

And he'll look the other way while China breaks our trade deals.

It's the same old Bush playbook.

Look, when the coach loses eight years in a row, you don't bring him back for a ninth season!

We just can't afford more of the same.

The American Hunters & Shooters Association is widely regarded as a shill organization not truely interested in protecting gun rights. The ad you heard is regarded by many (to include me) to be a clever way to lull people who should know better than to vote for 0bama to go ahead and do so. I hope you will not believe this ad when it says 0bama will protect our gun rights.

A review of 0bama's record shows that he is promising in this campaign to protect our gun rights. However, at the same time, his past record is overwhelmingly anti gun. Unless 0bama comes out and explains how he was wrong in the past to be anti gun, why should anyone believe he is now pro gun rights?

Hi Redyellowblackdog,
Obama has as much right to change his mind or "flip flop" just like any other politian! Who do you know that hasn't done this or worse?
The people who have made up their minds to vote for Obama, me being #1, have done exactly that...made up their minds...they, like me, do not want more of the same cow piles!!
Respectfully,
~G~

I looked at their website, red, and they seem seriously ticked off at the NRA for backing members of Congress who do not support the interests of hunters and sportsmen. If AHSA is a shill organization who do they really support? I had never heard of them before hearing the ad but I did check out the website before posting it. They've been around since 2006 so what do you believe their real purpose is?

Certainly, 0bama has every right to change his mind. I simply would like an explanation from him that he has changed his mind. Read between the lines of what he is saying about gun rights. I strongly get the impression he is implying he has always been for gun rights. The thing of it is, in 0bama's mind, voting to ban assault weapons, urging the banning of handguns, and outlawing ammo that can penetrate a bullet proof vest are not anti-gun but reasonable gun safety measures. On the surface this seems to make sense, only that assault weapons are low powered weapons compared to hunting firearms, all rifle ammo will penetrate bullet proof vests, and handguns are invaluable tools for protecting one's home.

If 0bama has changed his mind about gun rights, hooray! Now, let him explain himself.

AHSA is alledged by the NRA to exist to create division in the gun community and to urge people to vote for politicians who back sensible gun control legislation.

Time will tell if this is the case. I do know many have expressed doubts about the AHSA even though they have a great sounding name.

Let's wait and judge them by their actions. So far, saying there would be no difference as to gun grabbing between 0bama vs McCain does make AHSA look mighty suspicious. I have no doubt 0bama would like to see Americans unable to buy rifle ammo (it can penetrate a bullet proof vest), own a handgun, or own an assault rifle. Of all firearms, handguns are the least powerful. Assault weapons look mean but are low powered to reduce recoil and allow more rapid firing. Rifle ammo is essential for most hunting. 0bama speaks out of both sides of his mouth concering firearms rights. I just don't believe him until he explains himself in detail. For now, I don't trust the AHSA, either, for backing him.

GooGle is our friend. I just consulted with our friend. I do now believe the AHSA is a front organization with the intent of sowing division and rancor in the pro gun movement. The AHSA is quite critical of the NRA. That's fine in and of itself, as I don't totally approve of the NRA, either. However, the AHSA criticism is for not more strongly supporting elected officials who are pro conservation. Well, sure, we can't hunt if the wilderness areas aren't conserved, but I strongly suspect the AHSA knows very well that many pro conservation elected officials are anti gun and that the NRA not supporting such people is OK with the majority of gun owners. It looks as if the AHSA is being delibrately deceptive in its critisim of the NRA by leaving out certain details of the NRA's lack of support for some conservationists.

I have to question the honor in changing one's mind about an unalienable right as outlined in our Founding Documents.

From the AHSA's website we find the following single sentence, which in my opinion says it all.

"AHSA is committed to advancing common-sense gun policy initiatives that will have an immediate impact on violence, crime, accidental injury and death and make our country safer."

http://www.huntersandshooters.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=13&Itemid=39

This is another of those corners that Constructionists find themselves backed into with far too great a frequency. Let's turn this statement around on itself, shall we? What, if people don't agree with gun bans, then they support criminals and violence? What a completely absurd argument. The verbiage used in the sentence precisely parallels the verbiage of the gun banners. So, the issue isn't that the NRA is creating a monster. Rather it is that the AHSA is unwilling to protect our sovereign right to gun ownership, as conferred by the U.S. Bill of Rights.

It would seem that the mind-set of the AHSA is that the Constitution is a 'living, breathing document', to be willy-nilly ignored and or modified at will.

I couldn't disagree more!

Senator Obama's anti-gun record is as clear as daylight. If one wishes to know what a politician will do in the future, the best gauge is to measure what he or she has done in the past. The Senator's votes during his tenure in the Illinois State Senate are a matter of public record. It is our responsibility as voters to do our own due diligence!

As far as I'm concerned, a 'flip flop' on a fundamental Constitutional right, like the right to keep and bear arms, is not something that can be overlooked or forgiven. Without the will to adhere to the tenets of our founding, we've got nothing to lead us into the future!

You have made my point only better. Thanks for the helping hand.

Good hearted decent people just have a hard time realizing or believing there are groups like AHSA in existence trying so hard and so well to misrepresent themselves.

The better we can explain it, the more likely we can reach people.

Isn't it funny that someone being against assualt rifles is against the Second Amendment? Thanks for posting this but I think the die hards would rather not listen and continue on the same failed policies of Bush's.

"Isn't it funny that someone being against assualt rifles is against the Second Amendment?"

I strongly urge you to read what the founders themselves had to say about the Second Admendment. Alexander Hamiliton had interesting things to say about this in the Federalist Papers. The Second Admendment is not about insuring our right to hunt. It is about always being able to resist tryanny. The second admendment is much more about protecting one's right to an assault rifle than it is to own a .30-30 deer rifle or a shotgun.

Now, as to assault rifles. I use to be paid by the government to be expert in their use, deployment, and in the training of others to use them. I know what an assault rifle is and what it is for. Banning them serves no useful purpose except to set a useful precedent in the minds of those unknowledgable concerning assault rifles that it is OK to ban guns of certain types. Assault rifles are low powered weapons compared to the rifles used to hunt big game. If the gun grabbers can ban the assault rifles, they can ban anything.

You should tell that to all the families of officers killed by them. Well and actually you could tell that to all of the families that have had loved ones killed by them.

In actual fact the few criminals who use asault rifles are mostly drug gangs. Outlawing assault rifles will have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on police officer deaths. Drug gangs will be able to obtain any weapons they want. They have the money.

The banning of assault rifles will create a new market for another high priced illicit item besides drugs. I'm sure the criminals who mostly use assault rifles would love for them to be banned just so they could also traffic in them for huge profits and not worry so much about most ordinary citizens having any.
