Based on my research, nobody knows who really composed Bahay Kubo. It is a folk song passed on to generations of Filipinos and nobody can trace its origin. Its Tagalog lyrics have been passed down through the generations by way of the oral tradition. The song's diatonic melody and waltz-like rhythm suggest European influences. The lyrics include plants which are not indigenous to the Philippines, such as peanut (mani), eggplant (talong) and mustard (mustasa).
