What if we, the human race, are an alien's ant farm?

I guess, more precisely, what could allow us to refute the possibility? Just as we are complex in comparision with ants, couldn't there be a species more complex and intelligent than our own? Why could life not be a cycle of things that are increasingly more complex? Isn't that similar to the concept of the food chain?

There's a science fiction short story on this subject. It's called "Bordered in Black" Offhand though I can't remember who the author was. Look it up though if you want to know what a human ant farm might be like...
