Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. Our family started celebrating Halloween yesterday by going to a Witch Hunt at Gardner Village. It had a lot of fun witch displays. The kids had fun trying to find all of the different witches and were rewarded with a cookie for their efforts. When do you start celebrating the holiday, and what types of activities do you do?

I like to get out my decorations. Over the years as a teen, then sometimes as an adult I picked up cute Halloween things to decorate my own room, then my apartment with. My favorite is an orange candle with a jack-o-lantern (did I spell that right?) carved into the middle of the candle. Our church has a Harvest festical, but my favorite memory of those get togethers is going on the hayrides. We call it Harvest Festival because some families (Christian and non Christian) associate it as the devil's holiday. So to avoid any backlash I guess we went PC and didn't call it a Halloween Festival. I think its what we make of it that determines what Halloween is.

That sounds really nice. I wish you had posted a picture of your jack-o-lantern candle. It sounds really cute. That's too bad that some people in your area think of it as the devils holiday. It seems like they are taking something innocent and making it into something more. I'm glad that they decided to make it into a Harvest Festival, I'd hate to think that some children didn't get to celebrate at all. Thanks for posting.

I wish I could post a picture. I don't have a digital camera, and the one my parents have is not working. What surprised me is how many people even on mylot talk about Halloween as a devil's holiday. I seem to 'run' into them this time of year when people post about Halloween, and I'm always still kind of surprised.

Well everyone has a right to their own opinion, but I'm sure grateful my parents didn't feel that way. When I was a child they used to celebrate Halloween in the schools. The teachers would dress up like witches and they would serve punch out of a cauldron with dry ice inside. I wonder if that's a tradition that they no longer participate in. It seems like they would have to, if the holiday offends so many parents.

In our house, Halloween is second only to Christmas as favourite holiday. My kids start planning their costumes almost as soon as November 1 on the previous year.
We just bought costumes for the kids yesterday. Every year, their school does their annual fundraiser--a Danceathon--on October 31. The kids are allowed to wear their costumes as they dance in the gym to raise money for the school.
Of course, the main event is the night of trick-or-treating. Last year my kids each had two bags filled with candy. This year's they hope to get even more...they are currently planning their trick-or-treating route on a neighbourhood map.
And every day my daughter will ask me, "How many days until Halloween?" Just one less day than yesterday, sweetheart.

Yay to my fellow Halloween lovers. I can't wait until my son is old enough to get excited like yours do. That's awesome that they have a plan of attack on Halloween night. What strategic kids you have! I hope you have a blast this year. Thank you for posting and happy mylotting.

If anyone of us in the house gets that night off, then we give out candies to trick-or-treaters. The last two years, we've dressed up but we might not this year. We've gone to the Castro in San Francisco, that was fun but now they don't do that over there anymore.
With a few friends (ages 21+), we carve pumpkins together and just play games (board games or video games) afterwards the last two years. Here's a picture of the pumpkins we carved last year. Mine is the fourth one from the left (I'm still honing my pumpkin carving skills), I put a carrot as the nose and two red bell peppers for ears.
