Cowboy or instant?  

Yes, my family does that all the time and sometimes I have to stop and say, What? Ha ha, my boyfriend's family does it to and they say words differently, but that is ok because I get picked on for my southern accent by his family, I often call things other names and they think it's funny. I sometimes for example call a "shopping cart" a buggy.

just a couple:

CHOOGELY MOOGELY = chocolate milk

GROCERY GETTER = station wagon

Well it will noy made any sense to anyone but people at home.
I out of curiosity look for cowboy coffee and found this recipe:
Recipe for COWBOY COFFEE

* 4 qt. water
* 1 1/2 cups freshly ground coffee (coarse grind - same as French Press)
* 1 egg shell
* 1/2 cup cold water

Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan or coffee pot. Add coffee grounds and egg shell to boiling water. Return to a boil, remove from heat and let stand for 2 minutes. Slowly add cold water to settle grounds to the bottom. Let stand for 1 minute to allow grounds to settle. Use any remaining coffee to extinguish camp fire.

Now don’t be surprised if, in a wave of nostalgia for the days of the pioneer, you attempt to brew your own Cowboy Coffee and find it less than palatable. Our suggestion is that you add some sugar to this potent brew, or take your chances. We suspect that is what made Arbuckles coffee so popular: their egg and sugar glaze probably added just enough sweetness to satisfy the palate without offending the big tough ranchers ‘taste for adventure’. Also, unless you normally go through a gallon of coffee, you might want to scale the recipe down a bit. Yippie Oh Kiay, podnuh!.
I am not sure if your dad means that, or the coffee maker coffee, it sounds like cowboy coffee is very strong.

Words are arbitrary. Take for example the Filipinos. We have strange recalls on certain things. When we buy at the convenient store, we use "Colgate" to refer to any brand of toothpastes. However, my beloved mom uses "chikinini" for corn. LOL

Never heard of coffee being called Cowboy. For that matter, never heard the bag being a poke. I think your Dad must have been into the Cowboy TV shows!!!
The only one I can think of off hand is real coffee being called leaded and decaf being called unleaded. I used to be a bartender and one morning the waitress for the dining room was late so I had to play waitress. I had a table of 5 guys that wanted coffee and one wanted unleaded. I thought he was just being funny and gave him regular coffee. Well, I don't know what reg. coffee does to him but I sure learned the hard way.

i like cowboy coffee to,can't stand instant. i'm not much on instsnt anything. i call a bag a sack. i'm sure there are other things but can't think of them right now.

Children in our family have given some strange names to things. For example, my knees calls Stomach as Pom Pom, Shoes as TOTO, Milk goes Mum Mum and may other like these. This discussion brought a smile on my face. God Bless.

There ar so many words that said in slang, cowboy coffee is black and very strong so he called it that because hi brewed i black and strong. When I lived in Scotland peole use to call a bag a poke, when I used to buy sweets in the shop they always used to say "I'll put in a paper poke for you lass" memories sigh

All my life, I remember my friends

Ohh well.... I like brewed coffee
but I add cream and sugar.... LOL
