Man, that thunder sounds weird

Last night, I was getting ready for work. I had just got into the living room after a trip to the bathroom and I heard a cracking noise. I thought, "Man, that thunder sounds weird". So, at first I thought maybe a little storm was on its way. Then the cracking noise got louder and louder.....then BOOM!! OK....THAT was a tree!I felt the house shake a little but did't hear anything else other than the cracking and boom. I decided to investigate, got my little flashlight, and went outside. This was around 8:15 so it was dark out. I almost went around the north side of the house but turned around and headed to the south side. Imagine my disbelief when I saw the top of the tree that is in my backyard laying along the south side of the house. That was when I started to get shaky. I heard a couple of people around the back of the house so I went to see who it was. They live the first street behind me and came over to see what had happened after they heard the noise, too. While I was talking with the neighbors about what had happened, I called my landlord to let him know about what had happened and he was at the house in about twenty minutes to take a look. He told me that he would call someone in the morning to get the tree cut and hauled away, call the insurance company for estimate on damages, and call the electric company since the tree was on the main line that leads to the house. I called my oldest daughter, told her what happened. She said she would call my other daughter. They both showed up with their kids in tow. One of the ladies I work with came by to pick me up to go to work. I told her to go on ahead to work since I didn't have to start until an hour after she does. My oldest daughter took me to work. I took some pictures of the tree against the house and they came out pretty decent even though it was dark out. I also took some more this morning after I got home from work. When I got home from work, I saw that the tree was being cut up and hauled away. The electric line had been disconnected and replaced after the electrician put in some new parts at the meter. The landlord came to check on the progress of everything. You know what? I'd say I was pretty lucky in all this because if this part of the tree had fallen 15 feet or so to the north from where it did, I would have been hurt. Now that I have thought about it a little since the tree fell last night, I do remember hearing a popping sound every once in awhile and never gave it a thought. It could have been the tree giving a little bit each time I heard that. I have picture posted here in this discussion and will be posting a few more in my profile so that you can see what happened. Other than during storms, has anyone had a tree to give out and come crashing down on your house.....while you were in it?!?!?

Yes, it was pretty scarey. Maybe, if the trees at your daughter's are still pretty good, they can have them trimmed out. But if not, I'd hate to think what would happen if they come crashing down around her ears.

That must have been pretty scary, I think that is the only trouble having trees so close to a house and it is lucky that no one was seriously hurt. I have a beautiful tree that grows just by the side of my house, we went away on holiday and when we came home a week later, half of the tree had been uprooted in a storm and was laying down right by the side of the house. How it never broke any of the kitchen windows or do any damage I do not know!

It was pretty scary!! About the only thing it did to the house was take down a little bit of the guttering. At least the main part of what fell did not hit the house directly. Just the smaller limbs were on the house.

I sure can imagine how you must have felt. You see I have lived through so many hurricanes, and tornadoes. I have even been struck by lightening. Like you I am thankful to be alive. I may have lost everything I owned, including my car to hurricanes but at least I'm still alive to recall how I felt when they struck. This memory will always be there. We seem to remember the bad more so than the good that happens in our lives. This was a bad thing that turned out good because you did not get hurt. I am happy that you did not get hurt. Now with the tree trimmed maybe you are safer in your home, I sure hope so.

The landlord did tell me the next day that he's going to have the rest of the tree cut down. The way it is, it looks like another big part of the tree could go down on its own. Yeah, it did turn out good that I did't get hurt.

Yeah, quite a story. And it's true, too! Anyway, the tree has been cut away from the house and hauled off.

hi bluerubymoon that hadto be a really frightening experience for you. the closest I ever cameto something like this was years back when I was about sixteen. We had a terrific lightening storm and there were strikes all over the place. We were on a farm in South Dakota on a hot July day. My dad and grandpa were standing in our porch when bang lightening struck the big elme not ten feet away from them, It split the tree right down the center. Also my dad and my grandpa were thrown back about six or seven feet, and crashed into a wall but were not injured just shook up. My that strike was so loud and the air was just filled with ozone. That was really very' scary. At least the tree when it fell did not touch our house.

That had to have been frightening for your dad and grandpa. That was just plain luck, I'd say, that the tree did not fall on the house.

that is crazy. I am glad that you didn't get hurt. Was it windy or anything? Was it a diseased tree. Funny how things happen and we can turn around and see where we might have had clues something was wrong. Oh and Yes, There was a tornadoe at my parents house when I was 15. The tree came crashing through the roof. No one was hurt. It was my bedroom, right over my bed. My father built our house and I think he did a great job because it held the large Oak up. I was surprised. Glad you are doing OK.

Nope. It wasn't windy at all. At the fork of the tree where it broke away, it was rotted at the topside of it. It did miss the house....the bulk of it anyway. I looked at the corner of the house this morning and I didn't see that anything was broken. The smaller limbs just took down some guttering and that's about all!!
