Does anyone think the old McCain is back?

As I am sitting here watching my television I see McCain at a townhall meeting and a woman asked McCain if Obama is an Arab and he took the mic from her and said no he went on to say something about Obama being a decent man and the crowd started booing him and McCain kept taking over the views it was a little hard to hear and I couldn't find it online yet since it's still so young. Let me first start off by saying, this is the man that I remember in 2000. Do you think that McCain of 2000 could be making a come back? Do you think that now all of this trash talk will be over? I find it very respectable that McCain has finally stood up and said something to these crazies that have been saying all of this awful stuff. Great job John McCain! So what do you think? I will keep looking to see if I can find it online.

If that is what he's doing, then he's only doing it to woo Obama voters by lulling them into a false sense of security. Once he gets people back on his side, he is going to turn back into the hot-tempered man he always was. I know this false security tactic. I've seen it happen in all kinds of situations from political ones right down to personal domestic situations.

I was really getting excited because the things that have been said on that side have been really depressing. I do not mean to offend you but I really hope that he is sincere in this. I would love for all this hate stuff disappear off of the news.

I don't think he ever left. I just think he spent far too much time listening to his campaign advisors. He is now starting to see the growing anger in the country and may be siezing oportunity to induce a little calm and return to the person he knows deep down he should be. The anger we are seeing is not just McCain supporters, it is not just far flung groups. It is creeping in to the main stream as more and more people realize what a sham our government has become and how it has started to effect the country in some very profound ways.

I'm sorry I don't see it as that way X, I feel that if he has always been that man that I remember in the 2000 election cycle that he would not have resorted to this or allowed for this type of campaign. But, I still hope that it means that McCain is coming back, that McCain I didn't mind. I don't know what you mean by far flung groups sorry but, I do believe that the statement "sham our government has become" is ringing very true with this bailout. Even though we disagree on the state of McCain I hope we can both agree that this side of McCain is much better than the McCain his advisors have produced.

I was glad to hear him finally put a stop to one of his supporters wild comments, but on the other hand you also have to look at the situation. It was a personal, one on one type situation, where if he wouldn't have said anything he would've been letting a woman blatantly lie about Obama and that would've been the nail in the coffin for him. Where the argument with all these other incidents was it was just random yelling, although I think he should've addressed it right then, it can be said he can't control what was being yelled out. I'm hoping this is a return of the "old MCain" (no pun intended). However, at this point in the race I think it may be too late. And now with the news screaming about Palin abusing her power it just seems like it's one thing after another for his campaign.

I agree completely. I think that if elected and they run this country like his campaign then GOD HELP US ALL!! It has been one thing after another and it's crazy. There is so much drama it's like high school. I can't wait until all this is over. This election has made a lot of people crazy.

Every so often he does become honest, but not often. He's my Senator and I know him and his record. I'd rather have Bush back.

Oh wow that doesn't sound good. My ex-husband is from Arizona and he loved McCain. I hope that you are referring to the dad Bush and not this one. I'd rather have Hillary but I guess she'll have to run next time.

"I don't know anyone around here that likes him, including his immediate neighbors. He lives a little over 10 miles from me and I've been to his "ranch". The primary complaint is that he has been erratic for years. It's not just the current campaign, but he switches positions every few days." WOW, that this is interesting! If people from his own state, even his own neighbors don't like him that's pretty bad. I guess you're saying the old McCain and the new MccCain as well as the NEW old McCain are all the same McCain? I've laughed during this campaign every time somebody would accuse Obama of flip-flopping because I'd already checked McCain's record - his entire record, not just the past few years - and he's changed his mind every few days, as you said, forever. I honestly have no problem when someone changes his or her mind for a good reason and is honest and open about it because it happens to all of us, but with McCain it would always be denial that he'd ever changed at all. I can proudly say that here in Pa. our Senator Casey is the real deal, he's from not too far from me and people around here love him. Same goes for Congressman Kanjorski, a true man of the people, as is Casey. Probably most importantly, our "third Pa. Senator", Joe Biden, also from Scranton originally is a truly great guy and people from both Pa. and his "new" home of Delaware love him. With these guys there's never any question of which one will show up on any given day. Sorry for getting off topic but after reading someone's close-up assessment of McCain I couldn't resist the comparisons. Annie

That was a pretty good sum of what I have been thinking for a few days now. I know the die hards will never see that but I think they honestly wouldn't care either. It all makes me sick. I didn't grow up in that time (I'm only 33) and I have no interest in having America return to that hate filled time.

I wish that I could believe that it was an honest, real change, but I've grown too cynical. He's had a lot of pressure to "dial it back", both from those who are afraid of where this is all leading, and from those who are pointing out that it isn't working as a campaign strategy. I'm even more cynical than that. I believe that the woman who asked the question was a plant so that he could make that statement on record. I'm sorry. I really am, because I would like to believe that we can elect a man of honor, no matter which of the candidates wins in November. Sadly, I don't see real honor in either at this point, but at least one of the candidates is trying to inspire hope, not fear.

I know what you mean I have really grown cynical over this whole election cycle. I don't know if she was a plant I'm sure that you could be right. This election is so crazy I am actually counting down the days to vote and get it over with. Isn't that awful? ugh!

The old John Mc never left, he's 72 years old, he's not going to change for anybody so making him into something he's not won't work. Old habits, good or bad, die hard.

We will have to agree to disagree. But, I am very happy that McCain finally said something. It was very respectful and I was so glad that I actually saw it.
