Don't worry about the typo's! Jeez, I reckon I may even be the King of them seeing as I have so many myself on a daily basis! It's good that your Husband can be responsible with his cigarett butts like this and no, the situation with the cat doesn't sound too amusing at all! Almost setting the car on fire sure is taking it to a whole new level though! It's a good thing he no longer smokes by the sounds of it and we're not just talking for his health here either! lol. If we ARE a smoker, we should always be mindful of others and the surrounding environment by disposing of the butts properly. That situation I shared in my discussion wording is probably far more common than people realise. Thanks for the response Becca.

People just gotta be more careful and aware of the dangers of leaving a cigarette lit when they toss it. I am glad my husband also doesn't flip them in the yard when he is through. Do you know what happens to filtered cigarette butts when a lawn mower hits them? They puff out and is unsightly in the yard. Nothing like having a coffee can full of sand to put them in...

I used to mow lawns for pocket money so I've seen how cigarette butts ouff out when you run over them. They don't biodegrade either so whatever is thrown out in the open will last a lifetime.

That is one good thing about having kids as neighbors..they have a sweet tooth and will pick them up for a $1..Yeah, plastic is the same..but I can't really seeing life without the use of plastic, it is intricated into so many areas of our lives it would be hard to try to stop using it since it is oh so very useful.

If only we could bribe kids with sweets to pick up all the butts on the freeways! Somehow I doubt their Parents would be too keen on that idea for some reason.

I wouldn't be to keen on that either especially if kids wanted to pocket some for a later smoke maybe, but still there would be the safety issue...But then it would give the kids something to do this summer when they keep hollering..Mom.. I'm bored..could choose roadside cleanup. Or as a punishment for being bad..

It might be a good thing to make kids do when they get community service as part of punishments in court? All I know is that it's a significant problem and there are butts everywhere. Someone's gotta pick them all up! It would be nice to think that people would stop flicking them in the first place, but many people don't seem to give a toss about the effect this has at all.

true..you can lead a person to a ashtray, and you can make them use it..but as soon as your back is turned they revert back to flicking again. They can get DNA from a cigarette butt right? so if they wanted to they could be writing out alot of $500-$1,000 litterbug tickets if they could find out whom to send it to..crazy I am I know..but it is 6 in the morning..

You keep some interesting hours Becca, I'll give you that! Yes, they can get DNA from cigarette butts, but the cost to do this would be astronomical! The main way to stamp this out you;d think would be from heavy fines, a solid effort to police it; and a consistent focus on awareness and education.

Yep, I do keep odd hours at times..lol only time I am not bothered usually is when everyone else is asleep in bed and I have alot of mail I have been trying to catch up on since I wasn't able to when little sis was here.

It would certainly be quiet around you, yes! lol. Even the THOUGHT of waking up at that time scares the crap out of me, let alone not going to sleep until then or later.

My mom always said I was a night owl..lol always have been.. I didn't get to bed till 10 this morning and then my sister n law called at 12 to ask about the 4th of July cookout and then I couldn't go back to sleep..so I been running on little less then 2 hours sleep all day..so probably be a early night for me then usual.

The cook out was so-so..but little sis had fun she got to swim in a big big pool instead of a little kiddie pool..and at least she will be here for my birthday tomorrow since she is staying the night.Hope you had a good fourth of July...I know alot of places don't celebrate it but do you?

No, I don't celebrate 4th of July at all and it's not celebrated in my country either. We have Australia Day on the 26th January though! It sounds like you had an OK day overall which is great. (Well, your Sister seemed to have had a great day anyway! lol) I envy her being able to go swimming too.

It's interesting that you've just popped in Theresa because I was going through some of my discussions this morning, saw a few of your replies and then wondered where you might be as I haven't seen you lately! And now here you are!

I just checked the link too and it seems that the news site that was hosting it may have now cleared their archives or something because the news text section comes up blank. I have no idea if there was an ashtray in the driver's car because the article never said, but I would assume that there was one for sure! MOST cars have them! This was just an inconsiderate tosser that wasn't thinking of the consequences of his actions. What a horrendous experience it must've been for the baby that got burnt too. Thanks for the response and it's nice to see you back.

Could there also be a possibility that the reason why he didn't use the ashtray is because it wasn't his car in the first place. Don't bother. I was just exploring.

What happened to the baby? How did the baby get burnt?

I'm not sure if it was his car or not either as they didn't go into those details in the article. Apparently the baby was burned when the driver of a passing car flicked his cigarette out of his window and it landed in the baby's car seat and smouldered away.

I'm glad that you don't smoke too! I never realised that you were a firefighter either! I get a nice comment about my discussions AND I get to learn something new about you at the same time! No, I don't believe this was a deliberate act on behalf of the cigarette flicker and it was just pure selfish carelessness coupled with unfortunate timing on the baby passenger front. It must have been a horrible experience not just for the baby, but for the baby's Parent's too.

People don't think about the consequences of their actions and this is as good an example as any. As an ex-firefighter, you'd know yourself that it's not just people getting burnt that's of concern as these butts can start fires easily as well. Especially in highly flammable areas which are common in places like my home country of Australia. For the record, I AM a smoker, but I'm also conscious of where my butts go. That's why we have ashtrays for God's sake! Thanks for the response Gary.

The problem here is that it never made any reference to anyone being arrested or cautioned over the incident, so I have no idea if the person who flicked the cigarette butt is even aware of what the consequences of their actions were! People just don't think that far ahead when it comes to the way they conduct themselves; or they have a "It'll never happen to me" mindset. We're ALL guilty of this at one time or another I'm sure. Regardless of being an accident or not, I still find myself angry about it because people really do need to think. It's a lit cigarette for God's sake! It could start fires too, not just injure another. Use the damn ashtray, that's what they're for! Thanks for the comments elmiko.

Heya Alice! Yep, I reckon the article has been removed from that link since I posted this. Jeez, I don't even reckon that Amy Winehouse would have any recollection of doing this. That woman's constantly wasted! lol. I once saw her bum a lit cigarette off a fan and start smoking it. Classy! I'm a smoker. but I'm far more wary now of doing the right thing when it comes to a lit cigarette. The article provided one heck of a wake up call. that's for sure! Thanks for the comments.
