I Don't Believe It! It's Too Soon

Today I had to go out to do a multitude of errands, including getting that dang converter box for my TV since I don't have cable/satellite or an HDTV, and while I was at it at Radio Shack picking one up, got a better antennae. I had to go to a few more places to pick up other things, and went grocery shopping as well. While grocery shopping though, I couldn't believe it! They were playing Christmas carols...like sheesh already. I can understand stores putting out Christmas displays and items to buy, but nuts, we only just got over Halloween, haven't even had Thanksgiving yet...it's too soon for carols don't you think? How about in your neck of the woods? Are they filling the stores with Christmas carols where you are? Do you like hearing them, or do you think it's way too early to be listening to Christmas carols? I mean yeah, I do love the Christmas season, but it seems they push Christmas on us earlier and earlier. Ba-Humbug

No we have not had any carols yet, although I noticed that the christmas lights have gone up in town already. Well actually my daughter noticed it, it was too early in the morning for me to register anything. We have the shops filled with decorations etc but that is about it at the minute, mind you there are only just over 7 weeks to go!

Ekkkk! Gee when you say it's only seven weeks away, then it does seem like it's not too far away...I just can't really get into the Christmas season until after our Thanksgiving though, or at least by December 1st

Gemini, Love that pretty rainbow avatar.... WOULD YOU BELIEVE, here in Austin, people are so danged "laid back" they just never bother to take the lights DOWN? It's like no-one gives a tinker's dam about traditions any more. Yeesh. Maggiepie

Retailers are really scared this year, since the economy is so far down. Personally, I'm not ready for the Christmas season yet. I haven't been in the stores too much recently, so I haven't been inundated with the crass commercialization of the holiday--yet.

I don't really get into the Christmas mood until maybe the first week of December to be honest...that's been the tradition my family always has had.

Maybe I just don't get into the Christmas spirit earlier since I always get a real tree...so the spirit of Christmas isn't there until then...I usually don't get the tree until around the 10th of December...that way the tree stays fresher longer and past New Year's

I don't want to hear carols before Thanksgiving - well, actually before my birthday, but they land pretty close together. I don't want people to mix my birthday up with xmas.

now is just the beginning of november!!! i can't believe it too if i were to hear christmas carols at the stores! this is way too early for christmas, even though i do my christmas shopping early. one day it's gonna be so commercialised that we no longer enjoy christmas. it'll be just another day to spend money, like valentine's day. i hope the day doesn't come so soon though.

I can't help feeling sorry for people working in stores and have to listen to Christmas carols for so long, unless they are able to somehow manage to tune them out. On one long block near where I live where it's a big shopping area they usually have piped music playing..so far they haven't played it yet, but I'm just betting they will within a few days. So like gee, it's bad enough to hear carols so early in stores, but on the streets as well???

Hi Pye: I know what you mean, when I used to Work at Walmart before having to go on Disability, I swear they started that crap er ( Christmas Carols) way way way too soon; I mean when you work in a place like that and they have that stuff PIPED IN TO PLAY CONSTANTLY will make you just "mental"..LOL! I guess that's my problem I worked at WALMART for too many years, no wonder I"m a crazy person; I don't know about where you live at your local Walmart but here at my SuperCenter once again they have in the front door area this big gigantic Christmas tree with the biggest UGLIEST HUGE ORNAMENT BALLS I've ever seen in my words out of my own mouth, I describe it as just "BUTT UGLY" YES, BUTT UGLY !!!!!!!!! its the ugliest thing I've ever seen "created" for a retail GIANT store; if you are going to put up a GIGANTIC TREE, MAKE IT A PRETTY TREE HUH?? Walmart you need to get rid of the GIGANTIC BUTT UGLY ORNAMENTS ON THAT BIG OLD CHRISTMAS TREE...!!! HURL HURL HURL!! GAG ME!! but back to the Christmas Carols..LOL! I love to hear them too, but not THAT LONG!!!! BAH HUMBUG FOR SURE !!

LOL--well believe it or not I live in an area where there are no Walmarts...so I guessed I'm blessed to not see any BUTT UGLY ornaments on a tree..LOL. I was just thinking that though and feel sorry for people who do work in stores where they start playing Christmas Carols so early....I guess after hearing White Christmas more than 50 times would make a person daft after awhile..LOL Yes I do love hearing carols but like geez..not until after December 1st at least.

I popped into walmart today and they had christmas music on. You could barely hear it because the place was so noisy, but it was playing. Much too soon!

I personally think it should be unwritten law that Christmas celebrating does not start until the 1st of December...I feel so sorry for the staff in these shops who have to listen to the same old songs every day for so long..starting too early loses the the spirit of things i think.

It used to be that the Christmas season didn't officially start until the day after our Thanksgiving, meaning the Friday after the last Thursday in November...back then they didn't even have Christmas items for sale yet. Yes, I would think the store help would go nuts having to listen to Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer 5,000 times...LOL and it does lose the spirit of things.

To be honest I don't feel the Christmas Spirit yet! I try not to allow the businessmen and shops influence me. For me Christmas is spiritual feast and not just another commercial festivity. I do agree with you that Christmas carols in the beginning of November are a bit pushy. We are still celebrating all saints day where people should remember their loved one who passed to the other life before us. © ronaldinu 2008

LOL--I still have my Halloween decorations up...heehee. So nope...I usually don't start decorating my home Christmasy until the second week of December...I may be of Pagan/wiccan faith but I still like to celebrate the Christmas season.

It has always been right after Thanksgiving and they start it earlier and earlier now. I too went to the same place you went and herd the music, I was surprised. I see a lot of contests going on also online with radio stations playing Christmas carols.

Yes they turn on the music and set up a tree at that little square in front of my building. They probably will do that early too this year.

Yes the day after Thanksgiving used to be the traditional start of the Christmas season. Wonder when they are going to start piping Christmas music down 82nd street? That should be soon too, no?

By playing Christmas music the stores think it will get you in the mood to buy, buy, buy. In reality non of us have money so we will be having a very lean Christmas just like before but we are going to be pulling in our belt a little tighter.

I know the psychology by playing Christmas music so soon is to get folks to spend, spend, spend money for gifts, but I can't help thinking it has the opposite effect in that with the economy the way it is and people just not having as much money to spend it could make them a bit depressed thinking about NOT having money to spend, spend, spend, don't you think?

What I think it is, the stores are so quick to get in with that almighty dollar that they're willing to move Christmas to an earlier date - if they can. I'm so with you on this issue and it really ruins Christmas for me because by the time we get there, I've had "enough already" with all the caroling and decorations and what not. I'd like to enjoy the scenery before it gets old as well as enjoy the other holidays that come before Christmas such as Halloween and Thanksgiving. What ever happened to the pilgrams and indians displays? It makes me sick!! ARG!!

I've noticed that too. It used to be stores would have nice festive fall/Thanksgiving like displays in stores. In fact in the one Walgreens near me, they hardly had anything Halloween-y. LOL--While I took the decorations down from my door, in my apt. I still have my Halloween knick knacks out..

in my country christmas carols starts playing in the stores from as early as lastw eek in october and dont be surprised that people start their christmas shopping from as early as late october too up till early december so i really dont think it is too early maybe you are just not so much used to the timing but for us who are used to it its become normal

It's just that in years gone by it was traditional NOT to start the Christmas season until the day after Thanksgiving, but now it seems they have Christmas items out in stores along side of Halloween...heck one holiday at a time. We haven't even had Thanksgiving yet

well you also ned to remember that these days tradition is gradually being forgotten and everyone is getting more or less modern even in religion so that is why it seems things are not the same way

Christmas carols should start the day after Thanksgiving. When I celebrated Christmas, that's when I would get my Christmas lists together.Anytime before then is way too early. I can see if you need to mail a gift that you have to get it early , but most are not being shipped.

i'm sure they had it timed to the second-they can't wait for christmas season. have you seen one of those godawful "halloween trees" yet? fake tree with a skull on the bottom. ok,on some level it's neat..but it's like they melded their holidays.

I know Christmas will be here before you know it,but it just seems more appropriate to start thinking about it after Thanksgiving or first week of December...in the one store near me they started having Christmas wrapping paper out as early as September

I have heard Christmas carols at the shops and I do feel that it is way too early. The main reason why they are doing so is that they want people to start shopping for Christmas early. With the economy not doing too well, this is the best way to boost the sales. Just my thoughts on this...

I would think though it might have the opposite affect since people are feeling the economic crunch and realizing they can't be as extravagant and buying a lot of gifts.

I feel the same as you. It's too early! I mean, it's ridiculous! Thanksgiving day is when Santa rides into town in the Thanksgiving Day Parade! That's the official start of Christmas shopping season! Why are stores insisting upon making it earlier and earlier? We're going to buy the same things for family and friends no matter when we do it so why not start the carols AFTER Thanksgiving??? I don't get it. I think hearing Christmas carols this early takes away from Thanksgiving. It seems to me that it would put you in a Christmas mode when you should be looking forward to Thanksgiving. It's gotten out of hand, that's for sure!

I feel the same way...pushing Christmas so early does take away from Thanksgiving. I noticed in some stores they don't even sell Thanksgiving type stuff anymore, like even cards..it's all Christmas side by side with Halloween cards as early as September

Yep, in the WalMart I shop at they have Christmas stuff all over the place but only one tiny aisle for Thanksgiving things. Granted, Thanksgiving isn't nearly the HUGE holiday that Thanksgiving is, but geesh!
