Went for a job interview and for an antique appraisal today.

The good news is that I will be given a spot on the substitute teacher list after my background check comes back and the board meets to approve me. The bad news is that first I get told if computerized finger prints then the check can be done right away, but we can't do the computerized prints. So then I get the regular fingerprints and I get told 3 weeks. But today, the Principal said 4 to 8 weeks before the background check comes back. So if I get it back before Christmas and in time for the board to meet on December 2nd, then I'll be able to sub before Christmas.
So I went to have my antique stuff appraised. The appraiser said he had tons of the same stuff already and it isn't selling. Needs unique and that people want to buy. None of my stuff comes under that category. I have celluloid that is all one color, people want marbelized,I have yellow, people want red, blue, or brown. I have a cutlery set, but they get tons of those and they aren't selling, I have a mirror set from the 50s, but he already has three and they aren't selling.
So tomorrow, I try for temp services.
Meanwhile, my boss emails me that 12 hours on the weekends are no more, 10 hours are all he can authorize and I can get paid for.
So have you ever had to wait for a long time to get work? I had to wait before. I waited 7 weeks and a bureaucrat had lost my file, back in 1985. So it was re-sent by fax with a message urgent. I was to start work or the state would take the money away for the position, but I couldn't start work because the state didn't OK me.
Have you ever tried to sell the things you own only to be told that no one is buying that kind of stuff?
Have you ever worked for temporary services? I have, this will be my 4th round with them. I hope I type fast enough on the test tomorrow to get a decent job. Otherwise, they'll have to send me to a warehouse and I'll just get hurt or sick again.
I keep trying, wish me luck tomorrow, thanks and take care.

Congrats, I hope you get it, I know how bad the job market is today and if you get this, you are one of a few I know that is getting a job..Yeah, I am still looking, and my husband is getting mad because I haven't gotten one yet, though I don't know what he expects me to do..I should have also not listened to him about turning in an application at this other school in the county..I now have applications in every school in the county but one, because he said he didn't want me working there and instead sent me to another county to put an application in..(probably because that town has a great pizza place..
) And that place looked promising, except I found out that they don't reimburse you for the background check, where in this county, they do..
As for your antiques, that is a hard market too..I have an old china cabinet and about 3 years ago we were told it was worth only 100.00..So I am keeping it, maybe my children or grandchildren can get a better deal when it is even older..And I did a search for my china and can to the conclusion, I can only get about 300.00-350.00 for it, because I am missing 2 bowls...
Maybe if you hang onto your antiques a little longer, there will be a better demand for it..

No one reimburses or pays for background checks here anymore. But I lucked out and got VESID to pay for mine.
A friend of mine once told me that if you haven't applied to 100 places, you haven't even begun to look. She put in 100, got 100 rejections, she said, "Oh well, first 100 down, onto my next 100." Does that give you an indication of things in my area? Thanks, the Temp Service Agency knows me and they'll send me somewhere eventually. My problem is time.
Once you get a job, maybe you can find and buy the other two bowls to the set. Thanks and take care.

Wow, 100? I don't think this county has that many business..Well maybe, but not all I could apply for..It wouldn't cost much to replace the 2 bowls, but I was thinking along the lines of selling..Because I will never be able to use them properly and if someone else has the means to use something this nice and is willing to pay, I am willing to sell..

I know you're thinking of selling. What I was thinking is that sometimes people won't buy an incomplete set, but they will buy a complete one and for way more money so it may or may not be to your advantage to complete the set.
At any rate, I applied to over 100 places when I left college and it was like 150 before I got a job. She was in her 50s and I think it was 300 applications before she received a job offer. Have you read, "What Color is your Parachute?" Or any of the job hunting books? They can be a big help. Take care

Hi writersedge. Congrats on getting to be included on the substitute teacher list. Hope your background check comes back quickly. Hope you get the computerized type of fingerprints. They go pretty quickly.
Sorry to hear the antique dealer isn't interested in your stuff. The only time we've tried to sell antique stuff was when we had an auctioneer come to our house up north and decide what he would take to auction off (we were getting ready to move to FL from up north). We loved our antiques but they don't do well in the heat and humidity of FL, so we decided to have them auctioned off before we moved here.
Hey, good luck on applying for a temporary job. Hope your fingers speed across those keys and that they want to send you out right then. I did work for temp services many years ago (1970s) and loved it. It was interesting to work at different places. But the second place I worked at hired me for "permanent employment."

State police said they couldn't do the computerized prints, so had to go to the Sheriff's and do regular ink prints.
I couldn't do the tests for typing and word processing yesterday because I ran out of time. Many people called while I was there and she told each one "We don't have anything right now, unless you're a nurse. We need a nurse for one place and that's it." Heard that at least 10 times.
Second place hired you. Wow! Most places up here have temps because they have short term extra work, or don't want to have to deal with payroll, hiring, etc. So a huge order in a warehouse, etc. This one young lady wanted to work full time for this one company so badly, but she spoke to a guy who had been a temp for a year. Now I thought that after a certain amount of time, you're not a temp. But that place only permanently hired management, everyone else was a temp. Very seldom does anyone go from temp to hire, but once in awhile it happens. I have heard of it, but boy oh boy have you got to be excellent! So congrats on the job at the second place you tried, that was terrific! Take care and thanks.

This is certainly an interesting combination of events to occur in a single day writersedge! I am sorry but I don't have comparitive stories to share with you but I do wish you luck for tomorrow and every day after that. Stay positive always, believe in yourself always; and visualize your success at every opportunity. The saying is that things come in threes and that is over and done with after today, so I am sure it will all be blue skies and positive things from here as long as you believe!

I wish you luck with your test tomorrow.
I never worked for a temp agency before, it scares me to only know that I have a job for a while only. But I heard it is also one way to get better pays and better position because the agency does all the shopping for you. Also you get more exposure to different jobs so better chances of getting more job offers.
Anyhow, unemployment rate is high in our states right now.
I wish you luck and hope you get the job soon

Yes, unemployment is really high right now so any work at least is work. I'm not crazy about temporary positions, they're a pain. First of all, you have to find the place every time you start a new place. Second, you never know what they are going to be like, and third, I've had some not so great experiences with some companies. Thanks and take care.

I guess if they only needed extra help temporarily, it might be temp service. Some jobs I can only get through a temporary service agency. If they only need the extra help in the summer, it might be a summer job or a seasonal one. Thanks for responding and take care.
