i have lived in several places that were growing in population but instead of using buildings that were already there and ready to rent they would just clear land and build another building.. some times identical to the ones that were already vacant!! i find this insane and wasteful because if we would actually use the buildings we had we could preserve the wild life and environment better.. so i think there should be a law or some serious discounts of some kind that when a new business comes to town they have to fill current empty buildings (if possible.. obviously some just will not suit some incidences but the majority would) what do you guys think?? wouldnt it be better than seeing 50% of the town being empty vacant buildings?? this of course in theory all of the buildings would be in good shape to begin with..

I totally agree. There is a section of buildings that have been mostly empty for YEARS and yet they are building the same exact type buildings on the other side of town where it was once open fields with lots of trees. Its very sad and i weep for the wildlife that has lost there homes so people can have a donut shop and another pizza place.

Things are not that bad here. I am sure there is some law, but it doesn't say the building has to be occupied, just that is has to be "maintained". I would like more green space as well, but I doubt that would ever 100% fly.

You are true and I must say its a very thoughtful discussion. but now all are using the real estate in business. I ahve also seen many flats are vacant. the owners have bought them and left. they will sell it when they think cost has incraesed

It depends on the situation. I cannot directly say that it's bad that those people want to build and establish there business by rising buildings in those areas that they own or rent. It is there choice to do there business and if its legal then i think its no problem at all. Maybe by putting those establishments there, there are also some people who can benefit from it aside from themselves or aside from the one who owns it. It could be helpful to those people who dont have a job and then they have the opportunity to work in there. On the other hand, you are mentioning about the mother-nature. Well i do appreciate it also if most of us takes care of the God given gift to us and one of that is the beauty around us. Its always good to see the earth thats full of life and beatiful views and not polluted with the air cause by vehicles and other things that may have cause it. But since we are living now in the modern times , things are expanding and people are more creative and start to develop things everyday for improvement. That's one thing we consider also and we cannot escape from the fact that humans are endless for doing something in there life and we want changes and improvement all the time. Well i think no one wants to stay the same with the life that they have. That's the same with those people who build buildings or if not buildings some other kind of business. We cannot stop them because thats one facts in life as ive mentioned also.

I guess who build his own building have bought the land, not rented. Maybe that's why it cost less build an house than buy a ready one?
Anyway, due of the recent crisis and the crash down of the houses prices, i guess now who have the money to buy an house will have the possibility to find really good business there.

makes a town so ugly though seeing all these empty ones over the years and them slowly going down hill to where i guess no one would want them at that point.. course right now a lot of businesses arent starting out with everything crazy

I agree with you. I travel to San Antonio every month and I am bombarded with this problem. I think we ought to have the EPA investagate the CEO of Circuit City. Circuit City just opened a new store in the summer of 2008 moving the Walzem Road store that was built in 1990. That leads to 2 vacant eyesores on I-35 come March. Someone please go to San Antonio City Council and draft a vacant business ordinance. Vacant buildings should have no more than 2 years when they first become vacant to fill the properties or the City will take enimient domain, charge them a penalty, and demolish it. I would rather see vacant lot with grass and no building vs. a vacant building. Antoher example is Nacodogches and Bitters where the HEB used to be. There used to be a HEB, Eckerds, Tuesday Morning, Blockbuster, Dry Cleaners, Great Clips, Winns, Dollar General and Larzland. Now there is a day care/playpin something taking 2 feet of 50,000 and that is it. Don't forget the Texaco (closed since 2001) on the corner. Solutions= Laws and Enforcement.
