You can lose weight by walking, but it will take a long time and you need to limit your caloric intake. My suggestion is to start out by walking and then work up to running. You can also lift weights. When you are in pretty good shape, shift to crossfit. I do crossfit and the results are amazing.

yes, but it can take a long time. If the pounding from the running is an issue you can also try swimming to help break up doing the same thing everyday.

Lifting weights will also help with losing weight. Watch what you eat and don't just limit yourself to walking there are lots of things that you can do.
