Our city and how it is laid out not that good

Our city is really a conglomeration of former small cities all close together. There is Winnipeg proper, St. James, St. Vital, St. Boniface,Elmwood, Transcona, St Paul etc. Years ago to make things 'easier' they decided to eliminate all these little cities or change them into districts and make Winnipeg one big metropolis. And to make it even 'easier' instead of having branches of main metropolitan buildings in the districts, for instance we had to drive all the way almost to the St. James area for my husband to get his handicapped parking permit, and we had to go to Polo Park for him to hand in the receipts to Blue Cross. A few years ago, when we had to go to get the Filter for our Filter Queen, we had to go to St. James as well. So for those of you who live in a city that was once a few small cities but is now a metropolis, have you found things easier or are you forever running around because the place where you used to get your dog, car, or whatever license is way across town?

Hmmm. This is an interesting question.
Austin Texas, where I am, was ORIGINALLY a "planned city," laid out in a simple grid with the state capitol building at the center. All "government" was supposed to happen there, all public business was the next closest thing, & then came housing.
As time went by, that went kerflooey, of course, probably mainly because Austin had no zoning laws. I THINK they still are very loose.
NOW to get one's driver's license, one must drive to the northern end of town, & I don't even know exactly where the new court house is. Or the new city hall....
Fortunately, Austin isn't a HUGE city, but because it mainly spread up & down the "corridor" of I-H 35 & somewhat east (geography pushed it that way; the hills are on the west side of the highway, & the plains begin on the east side), it's a long, spaghetti noodle of a town, so my guess is it's probably just as hard in its own way to get to things as Winnipeg is.
By the way, I hear Winnie's a beautiful city. True? Austin is certainly one of the prettier cities I've been in.
Thanks for the interesting thread!

Slick,
Yes, Austin =is= a picture postcard pretty city, especially near Town Lake.
In what part of Houston do you live? I've lived in many parts of it (EVEN on the poor end of River Oaks! LOL!). I used to hate Houston even though I was born there, but now I enjoy my visits--except on those swelteringly hot, muggy days! But now I have many good friends there, so maybe that's why it looks (& except for Jensen Drive with that nasty rendering plant) & even SMELLS better to me! LOL!
Nice to met you!

Man, that sucks. Sometimes when they try to "make" things easier, it turns out to be a big pain.

It sure does. Having to travel over the downtown and St. James and Assinboine area to find the handicapped drivers place that is on a street that is broken up is bad. All my husband knew was it was near the main hospital and he had to do a roundabout way to find it.

Wow this brought back some memories when you meationed "FilterQueen"When i was a young mother, our friend use to sell "Filter Queen vaccum cleaners...I went on several of their shows where they went to houses and showed them.I remember my living room being full of "filter Queen vaccums....They even got us into the selling..I di not see them anymore...When you said some of the streets or towns it reminded me of the old monopoly games we use to play..It has "ST James Place"Well this city( i live in Houston Texas) is so huge it is spread way out,its impossible to go anywhere close...It sounds like your city would be nice and all the towns running together as one, sounds great...

Except that we live in Mission Gardens that is in Transcona and that is at the North East part of the city and we have to drive all the way to St. James that is at the South West part of the city and it takes at least half an hour to get to the Filter Queen place. At least the place where we pick up parts for our washer and drier is closer. It is in St. Boniface and that is close to Transcona.

I grew up in Winnipeg so I remember when they changed it all into one big city. I
was born in Winnipeg and lived there for 44 years. I then moved to Calgary for 5
years and then moved back to Winnipeg for a year and a half, then moved back to
Calgary again, 7 months ago.
I couldn't handle the winters in Winnipeg anymore, so I had to move back to Calgary.
My whole family, except my one daughter, still live in Winnipeg. I travel back and
forth a lot, about every two months, to see my family, especially my mom.
Now that I live in Calgary, Winnipeg seems small. Calgary is almost twice as large as
Winnipeg and the roads were not designed for so many people, and to go anywhere you
have to drive through the city, where as Winnipeg has a perimeter so you can go
around the city to get to another end of it. They are now building what they call here
a ring road, just like the perimeter in Winnipeg, so it will get better, but it takes
a long time to finish it. They have been working on it for the last two years and will
not be finished for another two years.
Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend.
Your friend, Chris

I hate the snow here, but my husband loves it here. He loves the cold because he used to work for CN and when it was cold that is when they got the most repairs and consequently more overtime. I have been hinting that maybe we could move to B.C. or maybe Prince Edward Island (fell in love with the scenery) or the States, and when we went to Vancouver, I got so homesick, but he just wants to stay here.
