Obviously, we all knew it was coming but now it's been announced that President Elect Barack Obama will officially resign his seat in the Senate effective on Sunday. http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/11/13/1673335.aspx Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will appoint his replacement who will hold the seat until 2010 when Obama's term would end. There has been a lot of speculation as to whom will be appointed. Some possibilities include Jesse Jackson Jr. and Tammy Duckworth, the unsuccessful 2006 House candidate who now heads the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs and who lost both of her legs in Iraq. Personally, she's the one I'd like to see get it. Any thoughts? I know we have some Illinois residents here on myLot, so I'd love to hear from you! Annie

I don't really know enough about either one of them to determine who would be a good choice. I think that Tammy Duckworth would be a good choice since she served in Iraq but, I think Jesse Jackson Jr. would be a good choice too since Obama was the only black senator. It will be interesting, I really wouldn't want to make that decision.

Good point about Jackson and one I didn't think about. I wouldn't want to make the decision either. Annie

Good timing, I think. He can stay above the fray until he takes office and starts working with the new congress.

Well at least if they find out that he was not a natural born American citizen, he will have to go back and work like the rest of the Americans. And if he is impeached, he will not have the cushy senate seat to fall back to when all those angry people who realized that they had only voted for him because of his promises and he did not deliver would come after him.

How can someone who doesn't even live in the U.S. be such a sore loser? Of course, no matter what he had to give up his Senate seat, did you not realize that? The only questions were when he'd do it and who will be his replacement. He IS a natural born American citizen. Exactly what do you think he will be impeached for? George W. Bush has served out his term - well, almost - and he made a mockery out of our Constitution and committed war crimes, or so it's been alleged and will likely come out in time. Obama hasn't even taken office and you're saying he hasn't delivered on his promises. No President has ever had to clean up a mess like Obama is being left with so I think the voters will be quite patient with him. Annie

They will not. I read all about what Obama was like and the first thing he said that he was going to repeal the don't ask, don't tell law so that your fighting men will be in danger. (by the way if my husband passed away, I was considering spending some time in the States because I LUV NEW YORK!) He has decided to promote abortion overseas with your money. He wants to add s*xual gender preference to hate crimes and make hate crime the law in the States, therefore making it a crime for ministers of the gospel to preach Romans 1. He also wants camps where citizens are required to do volunteer work --Hitler had those, remember? You are so concerned with hating Bush, and wanting to stop the Iraq war, and taking money from the wealthy and taxing them to give to the poor, and Obama promising to give money to the Americans out of their own money of course, that you cannot see the danger. Oh yes I would not be surprised that some of the Americans decide to come up here to Canada and they will be draft dodgers as it was in the late sixties. It will be people who are afraid of persecution and our country does not have as warm a climate as you do down there. So it is going to affect us.

I hope Tammy Duckworth gets it, too.
