Yes, I do. There should be some guidelines though on things they have to do to make them more competitive. It's not like we don't know what they need to do to be more profitable-if you look at the foreign cars, that is a good start! Also, Union Workers actually don't make THAT much more than the foreign automakers. What gets expensive is all of the health insurance and retirement benefits that they get. I think the Auto Makers should be bailed out, not based on if they deserve it, but for the mere fact that millions of innocent people and jobs would be ruined. It would effect the entire country! I really do feel like the government wants them to fail, and that the two are working together to cause a collapse. I know that sounds crazy, but I guess I like conspiracy stories! Not to mention, the way they have been acting is pretty crazy too. I just can't think of a logical explanation for how our country could even allow us to get in this situation, other than greed and a complete lack of concern for the everyday citizen.

You're just looking at the surface. These bailouts are just an easy way to make money, for the people who are CREATING the money.
There will be lots more bailouts because a bailout means that more money can be created, which makes the crators of it more money.
It's difficult for me to explain. If you're interested, watch Zeitgeist Addendum ( www.zeitgeistmovie.com ) for a better explanation.

It should not be necessary but part of the problem is that the car industry has refused to move with the times. They knew that they should have been making non petrol cars years ago but they killed the plans for these cars or bought them and shelved them because they did not want to know.
Now they are facing the problem of oil becoming too expensive and an economic down turn and they are crying. Not only that the parent companies are not bailing them out so either we do or we lose an auto industry. Hard decision. Either way it needs a big change not just a bail out. I am opposed to baling them out unless they are also forced to change and become more competitive.

If they don't, the economy will be in further trouble. All those workers out of a job, so the companies who provide components for GM's cars have to put off staff, and the companies that provide THEM with components put off staff or go bankrupt, and the snowball starts rolling down the hill.
I can't help agreeing with the loony Right that this shouldn't be necessary, but you can't just let it happen or the whole country goes down. My country is in the same vulnerable situation. The system is clearly a failure if it allows things like this to happen, but of course one can't criticise Capitalism without being branded a pinko commie radical.
