I love detective stories and especially any by Patricia Cornwall, Dean Koonz and Elizabeth Goudge. How do you buy books? from the bookshop or do you try to obtain them second hand? To Me, books are necessary to quieten the mind before going to sleep, Some people read books as an escapism from their own personal problems that they may be going through and this is o.k too. Others like to read as purely escapism and this is also o.k. What kind of reader are you?

I used to borrow books from friends... the last were the LOTR books many years ago. :) Now, I've actually been buying used books from Amazon. It's cheap, they've got a wonderful selection and, so far, all the used books I've bought there arrived in excellent condition. I love books and I'm working on a good collection that I can proudly display here in my room. I'm just a natural reader, I guess. And I totally agree with you there - that there's nothing like grabbing a book to help you fall asleep... it's definitely more effective than watching TV! :) The last book that I have read - I'm not done with it yet, actually - is "Grimms Tales for Young and Old: The Complete Stories". I must admit, initially, I bought this to add to my collection more than to actually read it. But as I was going through it, I realized that it's one of those books that you can read, set down, and read again later on (as opposed to ones that you cannot put down, that is). :)

For me reading is many things, a release, an escape, a learning tool and just plain enjoyment! For me books are a must! I read a little of everything, about the only thing I dont read is romance. Right now Im reading a book called SummerHill it is about a school with no rules! It is a non-fiction book and it quite good and makes one think! Before this I read a fiction book called Locked Inside, which was a good read too! I read at least 2 books a week if not more, depends on the time the kids will give me in the morning before they get up or how tired I am after everyone else retires to bed.. lol

I rad several books a week too and for me too, books are a must. I've been known to read the yellow pages if there is nothing else to read! Thak you for your response

Yes it is that school, very interesting reading. I actually by into some of it too! Some parts scares me as I do think that there needs to be some rules, yet parts make ALOT of sense. We got boxes of books at a sale and I have been grabbing a few and either reading them or if they dont interest me, giving them away or putting them on tittletrader. I glanced thru and couldnt make up my mind so thought I would read the first couple of pages and it is interesting! Like you I think I live for reading. Well it is at least one of many things I live for .. lol

Yes, I seem to remember that this school caused a lot of controversy. I agree that children feel secure with some rules and as long as they see the sense in these rules they usually respond positively. I would love to read this book though. Thanks for responding and apologies for my not responding earlier.

I'm addicted to reading, and I must always have books with me. My current fascination is with paranormal romance novels. I enjoyed the different series available in the genre, and if I'm not reading, I'm online participating in discussion groups with fellow readers. I view reading as my main source of entertainment, followed closely by watching movies. I have always been a reader since I learned to read at 4 years old, and I don't think that habit will ever wear out..

No Wayz, I won't change either. Before my son and his twins came to live with me I was living on my own and my books were my companions(after God of couse). If I had books to read then I was content and did not mind living alone. I learnt to read early too and I am glad that I did for the experiences it has given me.

I enjoy reading as well. I typically like horror or fantasy type novels. I also like Dean Koontz, Jack Ketchum and Richmard Layman. Right now I am reading a book by Michael Marshall called The Intruders. It is pretty good so far. I like strange scary books that make me wonder what is going on and what will happen next. I have a very limited income and stretch my dollar as far as it can go so I spend very little on books but always am reading something. My father is also a reader and sends me many of his books when he is finished which helps a lot on finding things to read. Also I go to the library to find things to read and can even request certain books to be sent to the library for lending. There is also a second hand store that has some paperbacks that sell pretty cheap. I also always have the children read and hope that they carry it on into their adulthood as well. And with television being garbage (cable is going when the kids move out) and there are very few films that I really enjoy, it is nice that there are still very good writers out there that can entertain better than any hollywood flash and sparks.

I agree with you wholeheartedly Vicky. I like to watch CNN and AMC but hardly watch any other channels with cable tv. My son though is an avid football fan and this is why we have cable tv. There are wonderful writers out there whose works should be read. Have you noticed how creative we readers are in obtaining books?

Hi there! I have just read a review book. I am going to take exams tomorrow and I am trying to refreshen my mind of the math subject. Anyways, I love reading too but I don't consider it a hobby cause I don't do it everyday. I just read when I have time and when I get bored and have nothing to do. It's a pastime for me. There are nights too that I read when I can't sleep. I also don't have any favorite authors. I just buy books that I find interesting but I don't buy novels. I prefer books that are more of the general information and inspirational books. Ciao!

There are times when I don't read that much. There are other times that I will have 4 books going all at the same time! (a book in 4 different rooms) I am the church librarian and have access to all sorts of great books. The added bonus being that I can "preview" the purchases I make for the church. Currently I am reading a book called Out to Pasture, but not Over the Hill. It's a short novel by a first-time author who is in her 80s, I believe. I'm enjoying it!

That is so great - being able to preview the purchases for th church. It is so important for young people to read stories of hope and inspiration. Well, I guess I should be put out to pasture but am not over the hill! IOt is also important for teens to read about conflicts that other young people experienced and how they overcome their problerms. Inspirational books can give people hope in hard times. It encourages them to keep going through difficulties. Many thanks for your response

I just read A Book of Ages: An Eccentric Miscellany of Great and Offbeat Moments in the Lives of the Famous and Infamous, Ages 1 to 100 by Eric Hanson. It was a really entertaining book. I can't believe some of the content! I had no clue, and it is an awful lot of fun to read about such amazing things. I would recommend it to anyone. It would probably come in hand if anyone was going on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I bought this book at Borders on a buy one, get one half off sale. I like to catch sales because books are so expensive. My used book store nearby doesn't have a lot I enjoy.

Hi AmbiePam, I haven't heard of this book but it certainly sounds interesting and like something that I owuld love to read. I buy a lot from our local Cancer Society (and give them a lot too) I just cannot afford to buy books from book stores. I also swop with friends but there are just some books that are old friends and I cannot give them away! I know that one day I will re read them again. Thanks for responding

I usually buy second-hand books because they can be really expensive new! I just finished reading Bill Bryson's Shakespeare biography. It's well-written and extremely well researched, but I came away feeling like I didn't know any more about the man than when I first started reading it! It's not the author's fault really though, because they just don't know anything about him. I read to escape, to relax and just because I love reading.

Hi Phaedra, perhaps you could try garage sales for books? Or just ask friends to swop? No, there was not much known about Shakespeare. But do you know that when you hear these famous quotations it usually comes from the Bible or Shakespeare? I had a brilliant Literature tracher at School and from the age of 11 we read Shakespeare's plays in the original language. I can't imagine now why he is considered 'too hard' to learn'. Once you undestand the language (old english) spoken at that time it is really beautiful. Many thanks for your response.
