Mild UTI Treatment: Cranberry Capsules

My younger rabbit recently got a UTI. Due to the bad economy, the vet is now trying to squeeze out every penny and wouldn't give antibiotics without bloodwork. When the bloodwork came back fine, she wanted to do urine tests. Since I know what a UTI in rabbits looks like without that and didn't want to keep waiting for test results, in between getting tests run I started my rabbit on cranberry pills. You can't use the sweetened juice, you need either the concentrated juice or the pills. What I do is just take the gelatin capsule off the pill and let her eat the pill since she will eat it. There was immediate improvement. I am quite impressed. Of course, this probably only works on a more mild urinary tract infection. She was peeing on the floor in my room, but she was still eating and otherwise mostly doing fine (other than peeing all over the room and on herself). With the cranberry treatment right away the room was cleaner and so was she. I told the vet I won't be back for those antibiotics now. And next time I'm going to my favorite vet that is much farther away instead. But at least now I know that the cranberry treatment is effective.
