A request for hints and tips | | Hi folks. My partner has a small dependency problem with alcohol. She's tough and strong, so I know she can deal with it - she's just decided to take things in hand, two days ago - but I wondered if anyone could share tips on things I can do to help her through what will undoubtedly be a difficult time. I've booked a week off work already, to make sure I'm here for her if she needs me when the withdrawal hits, and I'm about to make sure there are no bottles lying around to remind her.
Anything else I can do to give her a little extra help?

SpikeTheLobster (803) | 1 year ago | Thanks, replies are all appreciated. I'd thought about that, but she doesn't get on very well with yoga!*D'oh*
She has started working out regularly, so that's something to encourage - along the same lines, but her own choice of exercise. We've also decided to go out walking regularly. We live near the sea, which is very calming.

Consulting a doctor should really give a great help in dealing with people having dependency in alcohol, take note, no matter how tough or strong he/she might be. Just saying it like, 'I will stop drinking alcohol.' but just a few days past, they just started drinking again. It will be tough for her on the first few months, because the thirst and temptation is always there... So just be there for her...
see yah!

SpikeTheLobster (803) | 1 year ago | Indeed. This isn't the first time she's 'decided', but it*is* the first time she's looked me in the eye and made a promise. She always, always keeps her promises, so I know this is for real and not just a momentary thought. Day 5 seems to be the toughest for her, from previous experience - which is why Ihave the week off work!!

SpikeTheLobster (803) | 1 year ago | We tried calling AA, but we don't like their way of looking at things. They treat alcoholism as a disease, a medical condition, rather than as a problem. We do, however, have a local group we're going to see tomorrow who work the way we like. Thanks for the Alanon tip, though - wasn't aware of that until now!

muscles4me (8528) | 1 year ago | Medical science agrees that alcoholism is a disease. It is an obsession of the mind and an alergy in body, once we take one drink the cycle continues. AA does not force itself on others, it is a program of attraction and not promotion. If the other way does not work AA will always be there for your girlfriend.

| | 4. DAKSTAR (17) | 1 year ago | hey spike! first off i admire your willingness to help and support your partner through her alcohol dependency. i come from a long line of alcoholics including my father(now deceased) and my brother(who has been sober since 1985!) and i have myself had to deal with my own issues dealing with alcohol abuse. i understand you taking a week off of work if she needs you but in my experience you can't "babysit" those with drinking problems. it's great for you to offer your support but you can't be a crutch for her to lean on for too long. she would just be replacing one crutch(the alcohol) for another(you). has she considered going to any aa meetings? i know they have worked wonders for my brother. i don't know if you drink, but if you do it would also be good for you not to drink around her. another thing is try not to lecture. my brother does that to me all the time and it just makes things worse. so as far as giving her a little extra help keep in mind that you can only "help" so much. she has to be willing to help herself. spike, much luck to you and especially to your partner! i hope i was of some small help.

SpikeTheLobster (803) | 1 year ago | Thanks for that. I don't intend to babysit for long, but I did want to be there for the first, rough period. Thankfully I don't drink, having given up after my own period of heavy drinking - though not alcoholism as such - back in my University days. No lectures from me, either - had too many of those in the past from my preacher Dad, so I know that they just make people revolt even more, lol!
Thanks for the good wishes. We'll make it. She's one tough cookie.

He too is a strong and amasing indvidual who needed/s alot of support. It sounds like you are doing an great job. One thing that I found that helped me help him was I went to Alanon meetings. It helped me understand what he was going thru and would be experiencing. Another thing that we did was we turned to Subliminal Persuasion Self Hypnosis. We have a family memeber that used this to help him stop smoking. It really and truly works! If you are interested you can go to www.potentialsunlimited.com. . There you will find the CD that will be fit your situation. Good luck to you and yours.

Quick update before closing the thread: more than a week has passed and she's doing GREAT. Still very, very positive - has been for job interviews and all sorts of stuff. Woohoo!

SpikeTheLobster (803) | 11 months ago | Wow, you came all the way back to ask... that's really nice!
She's doing alright, thanks. Since the start of the new year, she's moved from a 2-day cycle (drink, hangover, drink, hangover) to three or four days between bouts, which is a big step. She's also reduced the amount she drinks. Last week was bad, with a bit of a relapse, but she's trying hard to fight it.
I actually blog the whole thing on fulltimecare.today.com, which helps me get through it.
Thanks for dropping by again!
