Delaware governor Ruth Ann Minner(D) has selected Ted Kaufman to replace Vice President Elect Joe Biden on an interim basis in the U.S. Senate after Biden resigns from his Senate seat. Kaufman is a longtime adviser to Biden and has indicated he has no interest in running for the seat in 2010, when a special election is required in Delaware. Kaufman said, "I do not think that Delaware’s appointed senator should spend the next two years running for office. I will do this job to the best of my ability to serve the people of Delaware."
It's believed this will possibly pave the way for Biden's son, Beau, currently preparing to be deployed to Iraq, to run for the seat in 2010. Beau is currently Delaware's Attorney General. He had previously withdrawn from consideration for the interim appointment.
That's one piece of the puzzle regarding the changes that will come to the U.S. Senate following the Jan. 20 Inauguration of the new Administration. Still no word (that I'M aware of) on who will take Obama's Senate seat or who will replace Hillary Clinton in New York. Any comments?

I thought of something else to add here that you'll probably disagree with but I think it should apply either way, no matter which party is involved - if the seat was held by a Democrat, the replacement should be a Democrat and if it was held by a Republican, it should be filled by one. It's usually just a two year appointment so the voters get their chance to choose soon enough.

I don't think it should be a requirement that the person be of the same party as their predecessor. I think the most important thing is that they represent the will of the people. I can understand leaning towards someone of the same party, but it shouldn't be used to rule out a better candidate.

Annie,
Is it official that Hillary will be chosen and accept the secretary of state job? I didn't think it was decided yet. Strange though, it sure looks like a Clinton whitehouse instead of an Obama one.

No, it hasn't been "officially" announced yet but it seems it's as close to being official as it can get without being official.
Yes, there are some Clinton people on Obama's team but there's one thing about that - it will NOT be a Bush White House!

I agree and I think the voters in Delaware knew what the situation could be when they voted for the same candidate for Senator and V.P. They were probably pretty well aware of the possibility of having someone appointed for an interim term and weren't counting on it being someone who would be spending that whole two years campaigning for a full term. Basically if that were the case the seat might just as well be left vacant.

There had been rumors that is what would take place - an interim taking the office until Biden's son could return and run for the office.

I think it's all very interesting as soon as these governors start making some choices lol
I've heard people throwing Bill's name out there for Hillary's replacement but, I don't think he would like the Senate after sitting in the Oval Office lol
