Should Marijuana Be Legalized Within The United States? email this discussion to a friend?

I will weigh in first on this controversial topic.

I will save your eyes from having to read a wall of text but I will simply leave general reasons in a bulleted fashion. If you would like clarification I will willingly respond.

* Marijuana has had medical evidence proving it has medicinal effects
* It has less carcinogens (cancer causing agents) than a cigarette.
* Overall, it is better for your lungs than the typical cigarette.
* We do not need any more governmental intervention in our lives
* It is an all natural plant, much like loose tobacco for pipes.
* Hemp (made from marijuana plants) is a very durable fabric
* Easy to grow, and very profitable (both for gov't and farmers)

No, I do not think that it should be legal. It is mind altering and have you ever smoked it? You can't drive around and function acting like that. If you smoke pot and drive and kill my kid then I would be pissed whether it was legal or not. Who cares about the profit. That is just insane.

So is alcohol, and any other addictive medicine or substance. I think that you are being irrational, considering how it was legal until the government decided so in 1938. I just cannot accept how something that knowingly causes cancer like cigarettes can be legal while something that has been linked to helping glaucoma is illegal.

Quick question, you are also for a ban on hemp?
Hemp has a countless amount of uses, such as:
paper, textiles, fuels, food, sealants, and many more
This is banned by current laws.

baileycows argument has no logic. There are dozens of drugs that can alter driving function from legal ones like alcohol to illegal ones like narcotics. Even some presciption ones can cause impairment. It is illegal to drive while impaired period. Throwing thousands of people in jail for years at incredible cost of ruined lives and money in case someone drives impaired is illogical.

Insanity is keeping doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result. Prohibition of pot has not worked, yet law enforcement still thinks if they find enough grow fields and throw enough people in jail the will solve the pot "problem". It has not worked, is not working, and will not work, try something different and stop the insanity.

I am all for it simply because I know it helps people in pain to feel better. I am a chronic pain sufferer and I even had a doctor tell me (off the record of course) to smoke some and see if it helped before he would prescribe some pain meds. Because I am not the type of person to go looking for it, I did not take his advice but I have had people tell me I should try it and they tell me the benefits they get from it.

Might as well, but I really do hope that they use education and law enforcement to prevent kids from smoking. It would be best that it is not abused. It does have it's cons, but I think the good outweighs the bad here.

It needs to be legalised and controlled the same way alcohol is. Sell it in lick her stores, can't believe that I can't say that word here, and penalise those that DWI the same as alcohol.
If this were to be done, the crime rate would drop and gang related activity would surely decrease. The government could corner the market by offering such low prices, everyone else will stop selling. When that happens the government will have the only product around, much like the sale of alcohol in Washington State.
I agree that it should be made legal for use for Americans of legal age.
Think of the tax revenue that it would bring in.
Think of the gangs that won't have product to sell any longer.
Think of how safe it will be to purchase quality and safe weed in a setting thats not in some back alley.
I see nothing but good from a decision like this.

Wow, this one that always sparks a heated debate. I think it should be, because with all of the txpayer's money going into efforts to stop usage, people still smoke it. It would just be easier to make it legal. Alcohol is not that great for you, but prohibition was not successful, so it was made legal again.

I own a Hemp Store and have for 16 years so no need to say what my answer is, but really if anyone smokes its best through a vaporizer..this way you keep out all carcinogens by smoking the vapors of the product or eat brownies..
Anyone with a medical problem should be left to do whatever they want with no one coming in and saying whats right or wrong.
Until everyone knows how it affects them this should be done by anyone in the privacy of their own place where they aren't driving and or creating a scene to upset anyone like the first comment...This doesn't need to make people against but we need to help make them understand more..
Thanks for the discussion and hope it helps at least one!

You make the brownies and I'll bring the coffee. I've used a vaporizer exactly once and can't wait to get my hands on another one. I live in a very small town and its over a hundred miles to the nearest head shop.

Legalise it, tax it and use the proceeds for further education about the misuse and dangers of real drugs.

9. WolfSpirit292 (79)   ranked 870 out of 3,982 in thinker   1 year ago

Normally I would say "what the heck, let everyone do what they want" as it's not like I'm being forced to smoke it. I would never do drugs- not to mention I'd get fired as a security guard if I did- but no one is shoving it down my throat.

HOWEVER, when you think about it, even if you're like me and say "well it's not effecting me cause I'm not being forced to smoke or anything", think again. Do you really want someone stoned driving around in a car, that could hit you in your car- severly damaging your car, YOU, and your loved ones? Or driving down the street and hitting someone cause they're too stoned out? Robbing some place, maybe shooting someone, cause they're too stoned out to remember what they're doing? And those are only a few examples... Think about it... Even if YOU aren't smoking, it's still effecting you.

WolfSpirit292 (79)   ranked 870 out of 3,982 in thinker  1 year ago

Just as an afterthought... all illegal drugs are illegal for a reason. Just think about what that crap does to people? And even if you're like me- never have and never will do any types of illegal drugs- even though you may not being doing it, some idiot next to you that is can go nuts and now you're in trouble because of the drug. Illegal drugs are illegal for a reason, and they need to stay that way.

myLot reputation of 82/100. PrincessKitten (644)   ranked 614 out of 3,982 in thinker  1 year ago

wolfspiirit292,
But have you ever wondered WHY it's illegal? It has nothing to do with the effects it has on the human body, it's all about profitability. If you leagalize it, there's no way to make a profit off of it because it will grow ANYWHERE....there's a reson it's nicknamed "weed".

The Pharmaseutical companies would lose BILLIONS. They can't patent a plant like this and this stuff will be legal as soon as they can figure out how to make us pay for it, which they can't, so it won't.

That may or may not be true, but it does far more damage than it does good. I've seen what it does to people. I've you ever had to take down someone dopped up? With a gun? Cause they are too f'ed up to realize what they're doing and trying to rob a jobsite you're at? I'm an armed security guard and work everything from steel mills and scrap yards to stores and fast food joints. Mostly the more public places (because they know I can handle the action as well as the fact I'm more personable to the patrons). That being said, I mainly work a downtown scummy gang area where drugged up idiots aren't exactly a rare site. So, until anyone can say they've done what I have, I don't see how they can really defend the right for someone to be f'ed up like that. Not only are they going to have long-term effects, but also they put themselves, and more importently other INNOCENT people at risk. I don't care so much about what happens to the pot-heads and other druggies that come in, but I certianly care about all the innocent people around that could get hurt or killed, from nothing they did, but because of what someone else did. Therefore, no, I don't care if that was the real motivation or not... I care for the innocent who suffer for these people's irresponsiable actions.

Doesn't seem like you really read my post.
You're so set in one direction about this that you can't see anything else.
Close-mindedness isn't something I expected from you, but I guess it happens to the best of us.

WolfSpirit292 (79)   ranked 870 out of 3,982 in thinker  1 year ago

Umm no, this happens to be a subject on which I already have my stance, as you can see. That does not in any way make me close-minded. I have listened to everyone elses opinions, including yours. I was giving my opinion on the matter, and even commented on your own. So, just because I still have the same opinion after listening to everyone else, that in no way makes me close minded. I'm very open minded to other ideas and beliefs. But, as I just said, even after everyone else's opinions on here, I still believe that innocent people shouldn't suffer for what druggies do.

Just because it grows wild everywhere doesn't mean that it's ok to use. There are pleanty of things that grow wild that are poisonious and bad for us, while other can make good medicine. Sorry, but in my opinion this isn't one of those things. As I said, it does more damage than good.

Liveon17 (64)  1 year ago

PrincessKitten I agree with you, that is exactly why it is against the law.
It doesn't make people act like wild animals if it did it would be taken alot more seriously, its true the only reason it isn't out on the streets with government approval is because of money, and how much they get in drug bust, its really f*cking ridiculous because prisons are being filled up with "druggies" instead of real criminals that actually did a crime. How is that for safe?, Criminals getting out early just because someone wanted to get high.. that isn't very safe and that isn't a world I'd like to live in. WolfSpirit292 said something about someone high being out of control, there is no way that was an effect of weed, it had to be sanity or some other drug, or maybe alcohol thats not against the law but it f*cks with people real bad, in fact the only reason alcohol isn't against the law is because too many people drank it and got piss when they tried to make it against the law. In Amsterdam you can go right into a store and buy all types of weed, and in fact there crime level is lower there than here, FOR THAT REASON!
I suggest looking into it fully everyone before you start speaking like you know what your talking about, because your just making yourself look stupid as f*ck.

Within the next few years there is no doubt in my mind it will get legalized, like it or not.

WolfSpirit292 (79)   ranked 870 out of 3,982 in thinker  1 year ago

Ok, so I'm a stupid f*ck now? Look here, I'm in law enforcement and I know first hand what weed does. And yes, the particular incident I spoke of was a kid completely wacked out on weed, and ONLY weed. There was no other chemicals in his system. When he was done being detoxed I went to see him and he was the nicest kid ever. You would have never known it was the same kid that tried to hold up the site I was at.

So, I don't really care- as I already said- that it may or may not be the pharmacutical companies fault that it's illegal. I really don't give a f*ck. Cause I've seen what it does, to a variety of people, and I see how much they- and INNOCENT people- suffer afterward. So, you guys believe what you want, I don't care. You're entitled to your own opinions, AS AM I.

I don't care what anyone wants to do in their home. Get high, drunk, shoot up... I don't care. But if you come out and start involving innocent people, that's when I care. And I get very, very pissed off when that happens. No one will bring weed, crack, or alcohol within an INCH of my site if I'm there. Why? Because all those dumbasses know I'll beat them down and cuff them, and then let the cops take them away. I don't put up with that crap, and I don't think anyone else should either. Do what you want in your privates lives, but don't be high, drunk, etc, and then come out into public and make innocent people suffer because of you.

No, i personally dont think that it should be legalized....teenagers r already becoming addicted to it n if it will be legalized then, the whole generation would be affected.
