Do you have an ice cream maker? Is it electric or manual?

I have often thought about asking for an ice cream maker for Christmas. Then I wonder how practical it is. Would I use it much? Isn't it just as easy to buy ice cream? Does it taste that much better than store bought?
If you have an icecream maker, how often do you use it?

We have an electric ice cream maker. In fact, we have two, on is the Cusinart soft ice cream maker and one does normal hard ice cream. We don't really use either too much, but I think we should more often.
I have no idea if it is cheaper or not, but it can taste really awesome and you can put anything you want in it. If you are not going to use it a lot, it won't be a great investment, especially in these hard economic times, but it really is fun and delicious way to start a tradition if you do use if often. It really will help you create memories!

I don't have one but it may be long overdue to get one.. I love ice cream and can't always find the ones that I really like at the stores.. I would love to make a great strawberry ice cream containing more strawberries than any maker of ice cream could ever imagine putting in one of their ice creams.. I do love strawberries and would add as many as possible, it would be strawberries and cream.. I don't know if I coudl keep up with my demands when making my own ice cream as I do love it.. I believe it may be better than store bought as all of the ingredients would be 100% fresh, so it seems as if it would taste better, but since I haven't tasted any homemade, I can't say for sure which one would be better..

I can almost taste it myself and it would be so full of strawberry pieces and almost whole strawberries.. Now that would be ice cream, selling at 2 half-gallons for $5.00 and costing about $5.00 to make each gallon.. I gotta get an ice cream maker, I am starving myself, all I have in the fridge is plain old vanilla..

We have an electric ice cream maker. Hubby asked for it years ago for Christmas. We use it once in a great while, usually while I'm on a health kick. The ice cream mine makes is rather soft, not as hard as you'd buy in stores. I got pretty good about making a lot of different flavors, and most of the time I think my home made tastes better than store bought. But with all the ingredients you have to buy, it can get pricey. We don't keep cream or whole milk in the house, so that's just extra stuff I have to buy.
They sell mixes, but I don't think they're any good.

Hi ya rocketj1
Sorry I can't answer your questions as I would love to know the answers myself. I don't think I would get one until the summer though! It is way too cold now to even think about eating ice-cream! I think the good thing about them would be that you can just throw whatever you want to in it like strawberries and you could be very experimental with it depending on the expense of course. I was recently given a Sodastream but the flavourings and the gas bottle for it cost a lot more money than it would just to pick up a bottle of pop at the store!! I do hope ice'ream makers are not the same!

I'm sure the cost of making ice cream is more. Although it would be comparable to a premium brand. You need to use whole milk (which would be an extra purchase for me as we use skim). We had an ice cream social one time at our church. We used the real hand crank machines and not the electric ones. The older guys at our church got the job of cranking them. It was delicious stuff! That's what got me thinking about it.

Hi RocketJ, I don't have an ice cream maker, friend, I like to have one too, making ice cream for myself for any flavor I like, I know how to make ice cream by hand and the ingredient, but I haven't try it yet, may be should get some time to make it for my self.
