Ideally, I'd love to see public transit improve to the point where it's reasonable for more people to use it. And I completely agree with you on the subject of gas and oil. In my mind, the only way for the US to stop being dependent on foreign oil is for the US to reduce its dependence on gasoline and oil, period, no matter what its source. One of the more interesting points that T. Boone Pickens makes is that it's not at all unreasonable to shift passenger cars to alternative fuel sources - we have the technology to make non-gasoline powered motors that will move passenger cars. If we shifted passenger cars to alternative fuels and reserved gas/petroleum products for industrial/commerce use (i.e. - 18-wheelers, etc) we'd come substantially closer to being able to supply our own petroleum fuel needs.

It uses no gas at all for about 40 miles, then switches to an alternating gas and electric thing. Since I rarely go more than 15 or 20 miles in the car (mass transit from there), I'd love that!
Now if it were available in a hot little convertible, that would be a dream!
