I was on a thread earlier, and the woman mentioned she kept a family bible. Do you or someone you know have a family bible with the history of your family? if so, how far back does it date? what interesting facts would you like to share?

me personally...we just recently lost the last copy of our family bible. i found out a couple of years back that my family was huge on blacksmithing, and we mostly immigrated from ireland, but we constantly married germans.

I have a cousin who is in to all that "looking up the family tree" crap...I am not really enthusiastic about looking up my family tree...I am pretty sure I will not like what I see looking back down at me LOL

i used to feel the same way, but i find it awesome what career my family was known for, i would find out yours, you never know, you may be like a duke or something and not even know. ( duke /dutchess w/e)

for example, on my mother's side is like half french and half german and we were looking up her french side, and apparently we are the by -products of a concubine to lionheart the brave lol. i dont know if that is a good thing or not , but meh.

Whoa! Being connected somehow to a noted historical figure can be surprising. Is that a French king, if I'm not mistaken?

no unfortuantely i can't claim anything because it was only a concubine... and i really can't remember havn't studied him in years lol. i think he was king for a short time. because he was called the lionheart, normally kings back then had titles.

Well I know from talking to my cousin that some of our ancestors were Confederate soldiers in the Civil War, and that some of our ancestors were also members of the KKK, but that is about it as far as any real historical figures. I don't think we descend from royalty or anything, but I can join the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a couple of other organizations if I wanted to...I guess we can't choose our ancestors. LOL

myLot reputation of 76/100. luvandpower (1091)   ranked 1,888 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

that is true about you can't choose your ancestors.

I find it awesome how your related to like the KKK and the confederate soldiers and all. I mean that shows like just famous hisotry written all over it! How do you know your nto related tos oem general or something? Might be some sort of money lost from back then you could get.

It would be my luck that my long, lost relative would have died OWING someone a pile of money, and my efforts to find some money I could collect would lead this other person's descendants to me, and I would have to pay back the money my dead relative owed this other person...LOL It sounds far-fetched...but you don't know my luck...LOL

myLot reputation of 76/100. luvandpower (1091)   ranked 1,888 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

well in that case you may be right...unforttunately , debt payments dont carry over 2 generations , at least in the united states it doesn't. but you never know, my friend who is like a quarter native indian found out she could actually go and live for free on a reserve because of her heritage and her blood was so close.

myLot reputation of 74/100. goldeneagle (5503)   ranked 691 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Now that would be nice...I would get some real benefit from all those "tax dollars" the government has stolen from me over the years...

myLot reputation of 76/100. luvandpower (1091)   ranked 1,888 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

like yea...considering we as tax payers have to pay for those reserves...and considering in the treaties we have with them we have to give them basically whatever they want. a poker casino there, maybe a club there... all paid for by whom? us!

too bad she didn't want that life...will never know why.

I wish someone offered me a deal like that. I am sure there must be a downside to it if she turned it down though...

I'm sure my dead relatives will probably cry in their graves over my indifference but no, I don't care much about my family's history. I'm sure we were just obscure pieces of dust in this Earth even from centuries back lol. The only thing I know about my paternal family history is that we hailed from Hong Kong and my paternal ancestor appended his name to our original family name so his descendants can distinguish each other from the main Chinese clan.

myLot reputation of 76/100. luvandpower (1091)   ranked 1,888 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

why would you want to depart from a chineese clan? i mean that is like ancient history, that is like known for so many great things. would it not be awesome to find out like your ancestor created the first "paper" or something?

myLot reputation of 91/100. SeishiroX (827)   ranked 5,110 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

I don't know what my ancestor was thinking. Anyway, we were part of one of the largest Cantonese families. I see a lot of them in the phone directory. In a way, I think my ancestor made sense. We needed to be able to distinguish ourselves even just by name.

Geez, what's scary is I might meet one of those in the main clan and not know that we were relatives or what. There are simply a lot of them to follow through the years. I think this family name is just a hundred years old but then again nobody kept a record or journal.

myLot reputation of 76/100. luvandpower (1091)   ranked 1,888 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

that is actually what i thought about mine also. i had thought it can't possibly be older than 100 years old...i was wrong. all clan's in china were famous for something, they all developed new things, and that is why they originally moved to a new name so that way they could be distinguished.

myLot reputation of 91/100. SeishiroX (827)   ranked 5,110 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Anyway you're pretty lucky to have someone keep a genealogy of your family history. It might not mean anything to me, but it could've been useful to a few curious family members.

myLot reputation of 76/100. luvandpower (1091)   ranked 1,888 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

yea...too bad like idiots we didn't double check everything BEFORE we moved out. :( even though i did find out my greatn grand father was a peeping tom :) .
