A genuine mail in your inbox? that is a scam, why don't they phone you to let you know that you have won big cash? i mean things like lottery is where you are in possession of a ticket and a draw is made, possibly shown on live t.v. But receiving mails like those shows that you are in against some scammers.
I get mails like that all the and i don't remember playing any lottery, and where did that come from? the scam people on-line.
Is easy to tell because this people can sometimes only tell your name but only to find that they only know that. They will be in need of money, obviously they would say you need to deposit some money into their bank account so that they will process you winnings, why can't they just deduct that money from your winnings?
Anything claiming that you won the lottery even though you don't remember playing any lottery...then you MUST know that is a scam

well first of all there are many scams like this going around and it would be impossible to know which one is true and which is a scam.....but incase you do come to find out that a particular lottery is true...
first of all i would like to find out something from the direct phone number they will obviously have given.... if nothin fishy then i go on....
then i would ask them what are the requirements that i would have to get done to get the money in my account.....
if the procedure is simple and doesnt involve transferring of my money to someone else or the courier company etc..... then ill give them my details and wait for the money to get to me....
i guess thats the only thing that one could do .....

First of all, EVERY email that says you have won the lottery is a scam...there is not one legitimate lottery that works that way.
I don't play the lottery because I don't want to win a lot of money. It would change my life too drastically and no matter what I did with it, someone would be unhappy in some way. My family and I are happy where we are but we couldn't stay here if we were rich...and we couldn't leave the rest of our family behind if we moved...so we'd all have to give up our lives to make new ones someplace else. It's just not worth it to me.

I'd pay my bills as far as it would go.
No seriously, I have gotten a lot of emails like that and some of them looked pretty genuine but they were not. I send them straight to my spam folder because they are scams. It is a cinch that you will not win a contest that you did not enter and I doubt that you would be notified by email in any case. If you had won a great sum of money the people who you won it from would want to get the publicity of filming the moment you found out you won.
