How many minutes you walk to stay fit?

Most people think that if they walk for 45 minutes at leisure, it's enough to lose weight or stay fit. Research shows that one needs to walk approximately 10,000 steps per day for fitness and weight loss. An easy way to track how many steps you take is with a pedometer which will calculate your footsteps as well as how many calories you burn.
How many of you use pedometer for this purpose? I don't use it but just take a brisk walk for 45 minutes, 5-6 days a week. What about you?

This is definitely a very good topic. I love to walk and gain a sense of satisfaction after my walk each time. Not only do I manage to feel very healthy, I also feel that my chest feels very light-headed and the air is so nice to breathe. Walking is one of the best and relaxing way ever to exercise.

Surely, walking serves dual purposes. It's relaxing plus it keeps one fit also. Thanks for your response zed.

I just get up by 5.45 AM and go for a walk for 35 minutes daily.Seven days a week.It is doing me a lot of good.I do not have a pot belly. My flexibility has improved.I don't complain of aches in the other parts of the body. And I make it a point not to use the elevator and only the steps to climb up and down.My apartment is in the third floor.

Well, I do try to do some walking as often as I can. I find it harder to do when I am outside compared to walking a mall, etc. due to Health reasons, and our very unpredictable weather here but I do try to walk every day if I can. But what a lot of people also need to remember in order to make it worth while you need to also cut back your calories and the type of stuff you might choose to eat as well. Because without doing this as well, you might never see any results.

Absolutely Krause, I agree with you that cutting down on calories is equally important as walking. Have a nice day!

I don't use pedometer too! And I don't really keep track of how much I walk. Sometimes I take walks for 1 hour and sometimes I would walk for around 20 minutes. It all depends on how the day goes. I recently read a magazine that walking for 1 hour would help maintain fitness and beautify the skin *smiles* and I think I will try to walk 1 hour per day from now on *smiles*.

Hello comfort55, I usually walk for 30 minutes, but if I have enough energy, I can walk for 45 minutes.

I try to walk at least 1/2 an hour on the wekends, sometimes for an hour if I can stay long enough at the park, my kids go and play and I walk, I have tried to do this everyday, but with kids in school and all my running around for my family members, time doesn't allow me to do this, so we all go on the weekends and enjoy the outdoors and also we do alot of hiking for my daughters GScout troop, so that helps as well. we love it and it gets us outdoors to spend time together.

I can understand your running around with kids and family members, and don't worry that burns your extra calories. But yes, do need fresh air also and its good you go out on weekends for that. Good Luck!

i love taking walks :) i usually walk home from the train station when going home instead of riding the lrt or bus which stops right in front of our building. It's just about 20 mins away thats why i feel that taking public transport is a waste of money (unless if it is raining or if i have groceries)
when i was a student, i joined a group called walking for fitness. we walked around for an hour. it was really good workout :) i used to have a pedometer with me but i think i dropped it during one of my walks :(

People should walk 20minutes EVERYDAY. And the speed should be enough to increase your heartrate. Leisure walking is good, but not as good as really walking for walking. I jog as often as I could, at least 20 minutes twice a week and make sure that I walk enough everyday from wherever to wherever - even if I have to go to the nearest convenient store and buy myself a candy, I'd use it as an excuse :)

Hi oyenkai, first of all my apologies for late response. I agree with you that walk should be brisk and one should sweat to maintain good health. Jog is more beneficial but I guess, good for youngsters, maybe some middle age people can also jog as they have the stamina.

I walk my dog Bella five times per day for 45 minutes to an hour. In the evening I will sometimes put her on her tie out to allow her to play and romp then lay on a blanket with me in the yard since I live in a complex she doesn't get to have free reign. I walk a lot for the purpose of keeping my knees from being painful from osteoarthritis and I'v also had major surgeries on both. I've had a total knee replacement on my right knee and a revision. On the left knee I've had two arthroscopic procedures and torn cartilage removed. It's really important for me to walk and my dog absolutely loves getting out to walk. Our last walk is late at night but she usually just goes out to chase the bugs that hang out under the lampposts while I'm walking. I'm wondering how many calories I'm burning since I walk her so often and I walk up to an hour at a time, sometimes it takes her that long to take care of her business because she's sociable loves to stop and be petted by the children in the complex or try to chase the squirrels. Since she's on her leash she doesn't go far but she can dream! Would anyone out here know how to calculate the caloric burn to walk ratio? If you do let me know please. I walk my dog every single day, seven days per week...she doesn't take days off lol, nor do I because I have to lose weight too so that I can wear an evening gown to walk my Daughter down the aisle of her Wedding to marry the Man of Her Dreams, her Soon to Be Husband!!! I have many good reasons to walk and lose weight, now I just need to find out all the stats.
