Bad news about Mom.

I'm afraid things have taken a turn for the worse. Mom was in a lot of pain, which is understandable. She slept sitting up in her wheelchair because its seat is higher than the chair she usually sits in, so not as hard to get out of. The fact that she was in so much pain I totally expected. I had a commode chair ordered for her and we set it up next to the wheelchair so all she had to do was pivot from one to the other with my assistance.

Then, in the wee hours of the morning yesterday, during one of her waking episodes, she began slurring her speech. Her mind didn't see affected, but her ability to enunciate, to pronounce her words clearly, had changed. She was lisping, then some words were garbled. To be honest, I wasn't sure if it was the pain meds or not. They had her on Oxycodone, which was knocking her out with each dose. But sun up, I began to notice that one side of her mouth wasn't so much drooping, because I actually was looking at her whole face to see if I saw "droop", as not working WITH the other side. When she talked, she talked out of one side only. Her aide arrived early and she noticed it too. Mom wasn't able to feed herself as she had been the day before. I called her doctor's office and the nurse listened to what I was saying and said to take her to the ER immediately. I called 911 and explained to her that she was going to the hospital. She asked why, and I told her what we were seeing. Like I mentioned, her mind was still fine, and she asked, "They think it's a stroke?" I said, "yes, possibly, and the sooner we get there, the sooner they can help." She was fine with that.

What they found was that her congestive heart failure was acting up again, her CO2 levels were really high in her blood (which was a surprise because we'd been monitoring her weight and it was pretty consistent) and her heart enzymes were elevated, indicating she might have had a mild heart attack. There was no evidence of a stroke on the CAT scan, although they could see she'd had mini-strokes in the past. They also said if this had been one, the evidence would show up in a couple or three days. In the meantime, they put her on a bipap mask to increase her blood oxygen and force out the CO2, blood thinners for the possible stroke, and a low-dose morphine drip for her pain. She was in ICU within 6 hours of entering the ER.

Right now, she's as stable as possible, but in good hands. Her physicians and nursing staff know her from the past and know what to expect with her. There are few things she'll fight with them over since she's pretty compliant, unlike some elderly and cantankerous patients even I've seen them deal with. But, how this will end is anyone's guess.

So, I'd like to again ask for your prayers, thoughts, light, energy, and all other good things on her behalf. I'm beginning to understand why I lost my job - that decision was from a much higher source than even the business manager. I had to be here. And this is why.

Oh jerzgirl...I'm so sorry to hear about your mom...You better believe I'll be sending healing prayers for your mom..AND you. I know what it's like to be a caregiver....one becomes an instant round the clock nurse, I know as I had to do that with my mom. ((((((((hugs))))))))) Let us know how your mom is doing and update us

Thanks, Pye. I definitely appreciate it. I'm just weary at the moment. It's amazing how just sitting in the ER and waiting for everything to be checked can be so overwhelmingly exhaustive. When the ER doctor asked me, "how long has she been short of breath?" I just looked at him like, "wtf are you talking about?" I said to him, "I don't know what you're talking about - I brought her in because she couldn't speak properly and her mouth. Her breathing has been what I expected for a rib injury." So he had to explain to me what he meant - like I told him and everyone else I talked to, that was news to me. We'd been monitoring her and nothing looked out of order except the new injuries. Her ankles weren't swollen before or anything. I know they looked at me like I was clueless, but with regard to what they found, I was. We hadn't seen any sign of it at home. I was told what to watch for. This just came on so quick. It's always a possibility, yes, but I just didn't see any symptoms.

AFter her fall the other night to be honest I was very surprised they had sent her home considering all of her other conditions!!

Be sure to take care of yourself too during all of this ok?

my mom had a mini a few months ago-her eye drooped a bit rather than the mouth,
but that..babbling? they get is really strange.i couldn't make any sense of what she was trying to tell me,so i just called the ambulance.it's startling to see in action.

they gave her some new med and she seems to have leveled out though.

I am so sorry to hear the latest on your mom. Hopefully they can take care of her again and get her back home and feeling much better. Yes, there was something different planned for you besides going to work and that is just being there for your mom, she was there for you when you were a child and now it is your turn to do the same for her. My thoughts and prayers go out to your mom and to you too.

You have my complete sympathy. We need to do more than keep your mom in our thoughts - we need to keep you in our thoughts as well. Hopefully you will be able to draw on strength from us so you have strength to give to your mother as well as yourself. Please take care!

I know it is tough to see your mom in so much pain and health issues. She is lucky to have you, and it also is a blessing that she is in her right mind and knows what is going on. She is in the right place where she can be monitered and watch. I pray that whatever is going on with her health will go into remission soon and that she will be able to go back home.
My sister went through the same thing with my mother two years ago, it seemed like an endless battle, in the hospital out of the hospital over and over again. Thank the Lord, it was finally determined what was wrong and she has been doing well thus far. Her battle is not over because she does have "C", but she is now very active and in the best of spirit.
Again, I pray for a healing for your mother, and I pray for you to keep the strength to continue to be there for her.
