Women over 40 Dressing "Young"

In my opinion there is a fine line between dressing trendy and looking trashy when it comes to apparel choices in your 40's. I surely do not want to be my mom, wearing pants up to my boobs and having "front butt", and I have to be careful not to be able to trade clothes with my teenage daughters, as well. There is a comfortable medium between trashy and wanting to appear sexy, when your not, and looking like a frump. I tend to shop the junior section where ever I shop and sometimes wander into the women's section, only to turn and run when I see too many prints that only say, "Hey, look at me, I'm 42!". Not only do I not want to be 42, I surely do not want to look it! But I also do not want to look like I'm trying too hard, either, to look younger. If you are young, which in my eyes is anything below 40, you will soon know that being in your 40's doesn't mean you have to act like your mother did. I will forever be 20 something in my mind and it is literally hard for me to remember exactly how old I really am, because I just don't feel it. So why should I dress the part if it isn't who I am? I am comfortable in my own skin and want to be "hip" but at the same time do not want to appear to be competing with my daughters. What do you think of women that you see, who are obviously "older", and don't dress the part? What will you do when you reach your 40's?

I do agree that there is a fine line between dressing trendy and looking trashy. Dressing trendy really boasts your self morale. There is no need to wear old fashioned closed. One can age gracefully. And being forty is still relative young nowadays.

You are correct, there is a fine line, and a matter of opinion. That is why I only dress...sexy...when accompanied by my husband. As far as "old fashioned clothes", I love the retro look, but I don't think that is what you meant. I love to shop in Antique shops for clothes and to dig through my 93 year old G'mas closet and chest of drawers for true retro looks. You can do so much for it and can get that "Grace Kelly" or "Bettie Page" look. I appreciate your comment about being 40 being "relatively young"; as I said, it is a frame of mind. Thanks for commenting!

What I think is , 'Live and let live'. I wouldn't expect anyone to tell me how i should dress & I dont give a monkey's whether people approve of what i wear so long as its clean and comfortable. I have never been one to be a slave to fashion so I'll continue to just go with what i like. Dont knock getting old...its a privilege denied to many.

I'm with you, I could care less what other's think! I am curious what people in general think about it though, just for grits and shins! I love the last part of your comment! "...its a privilege denied to many." Thanks! I will carry that with me forever!

The dressinG up part for me is really up to you whatever makes you comfortable. I have seen a lot of women who dress up younger than they do in an appropriate manner but there are also women who dress up younger and it looks funny on them. It is awful to see women dressing up young but do not look young anymore. I think the most important factor when dressing up younger than your age is your body structure, color choice and most of all how well you can carry your clothes. If you dress up younger and your body structure is too big you have to watch out with the color scheme you are choosing. Most of all carry them well with confidence. You will always feel right with a better choice of clothing.;-)

Great point! There are many people that try very hard and just can't carry it off! I feel fortunate enough to have a slimmer figure and can dress the part if I choose. I also feel very comfortable in my sweats and tank top! I'm NOT a slave to fashion, though I do know enough basics to flatter my figure, when I want to, to know which colors are best, and which cuts work best with my body. Thanks for your input!

there is indeed a fine line between being trendy and looking trashy.I do admire 40s and 50s women who can pull off being trendy without looking like they're trying hard to look younger.I do applaud women who dress on what makes them feel comfortable.I believe there are clothes now that can make 40s and 50s women look trendy without being flashy.
