Update on my Mother  email this discussion to a friend?

As many of you may know, my mother first fell on the 10th and was diagnosed at discharge with rib fractures and skin tears and abrasions. On the 12th, she appeared to have symptoms of a stroke, so we called 911. They found that her congestive heart failure had taken control, so to speak, and she may have had a mild heart attack combined with the high levels of co2 in her blood as well as the fluid around her heart. It has been touch and go since then with one bad episode on Tuesday causing them to call my cousin in Virginia - he's her POA. He told them that whatever she wants is what they are to do. She wants to live, so that is a relief. whistle

Sunday, she was ready to leave the hospital - talking about stopping at the diner on the way home (Mom LOVES eating out!) and was looking forward to being home. Tuesday morning, she couldn't breathe on her own to the extent that they called Mike, which is when he told them to do what she wanted. The bipap mask was put back on her. Every time they tried to remove it, her heart rate dropped and her blood oxygen dropped. But, they did take it off so she could eat lunch. They had planned to put it back on after lunch, but when they came in, her numbers were remaining stable. They were pleasantly surprised. I was also able to meet with her doctor and social worker that day. We agreed that she should have the bipap equipment at home when she is discharged - and discharging her IS the goal. thumbup

I didn't get to see her yesterday because of my automobile events (another discussion). My head hurt too bad, but I called her and found that she had the bipap on again Wednesday morning, but was holding her own in the afternoon until 5 o'clock when I was talking to her. I've got lots to do to be ready for her to come home. I still don't know yet if she needs a hospital bed - don't want to order anything until I know for certain if and when she's being discharged. I also want to talk to her case manager about getting a lift chair for her. She wants the Christmas tree up (she and Dad always put it away decorated, so I just have to bring it up from the basement). I'd like to put the Christmas table cloths on the tables as well. I wish my daughter was closer (and had her license back) so she could help me.

Anyway, for now, Mom's holding her own. The goal is to discharge her. She loves life too much to give up on it. I'm looking forward to having her home again (even though she's already begun interrogating me to see what I've done at home). My mother is one tough old bird (or, given her name, one tough old Bert!) wub

That's great! I'm so happy for you, I think I may have missed your car discussion. I responded to the birthday discussion about your mother's fall and missed all the other stuff. It's great to see she is holding on and trying to get home. Hopefully soon for the holidays! Good luck!

Glad to hear she's doing better and will probably be home soon. My Mom and I don't really get along very well, but I would still be totally in a state of mind-wreck if something was to happen to her.

Here's hoping all goes well, and you and her can share many Christmases to come.

It does seem like your mother is one big fighter for sure and it not ready to give up or give in no matter what. I admire you also for all you are doing for your mother, some kids would not want to or would not be able to do what you are doing and would have them put in a nursing home. That would be great if your daughter was closer to help out or anyone to help out as far as that goes.
Thank you for the update.

Thanks, Tyc. I appreciate everyone's prayers and energies and especially that I have an outlet like this to come to about this. I'm still worried about her. She just didn't seem "there" today when I visited. She was, but there was no energy within her. Very weak, not wanting to feed herself - I fed her jello, but she didn't want anything else. I asked her if she wanted to come home and she said yes. So I told her she needed to eat or they wouldn't let her come home. She still only had the jello when I finally left. My son called her while I was there, so she was pleased about that. She's not a quitter, but she seems to have little "oomph" to work with.

I am sorry that she was not up to par today. She is not a quitter, she is a fighter but she may be getting tired. I know when my mother was in the hospital she was so tired and the day of her surgery she was so happy and felt on top of the world, said she felt better than she had in such a long time but after her surgery her heart was just too weak to pull her through. I am sure that your mother is giving it all she has got. I will continue to send more and more energy up your way along with a prayer for both of you.

I'm so glad to hear she might be coming home soon. Maybe some of the worry and stress will be gone and you'll be able to relax.

Hey jerzi,
I'm glad to hear some good news. If I were you I would definately have a hospital bed for her return home. It makes all the difference for her to get up and down out of bed, It'll be a lot easier on you as well. I really hope that everything goes well for you and your Mother. Hugsss

It is great that things seem to be on a less uneven kilter. It sounds like you are feeling better, and that things will be happening along your family's goals. I hope she keeps getting better so you guys can enjoy the holiday and beyond. :)

She's holding her own, but wavers between really good and maintaining. It's touch and go, I think. I just don't know. I've put a few more details in Plunk's comment, so if you want to read that, you know what I saw today.

The tree gets put away with the decorations in place?? So it's an unhinge type no doubt...
with just a bit of a tuneup after the summers rest, haha

Lights and tinsel and a few rather ancient candy canes. I don't know about "unhinged" - it comes apart. If you grab it in the wrong place, the bottom falls off. But, she loves that tree with its twinkling colored lights.

I saw her today. It's hard to say how she's doing. I didn't like the looks or sound of her tonight. She wouldn't eat, they have her on clear liquids (I don't know why), and she just didn't seem to have any enthusiasm. But, she wants to come home, so I'm still hoping she comes around. I suspect it's because she didn't have a bowel movement for a week, so if they got her to go, they might not want her to "plug" up again. She didn't seem happy that I requested a bipap machine for home when she's discharged, but tough. She needs it at times, so she's going to have it. She's also upset that I got her two cases of nutritional drink - says she doesn't want anything like that. But, if this is how she's going to eat at times, I want to have that on hand. I can always add sugar free chocolate syrup to it to change the flavor. Otherwise, she's holding her own. Anything could happen at this point, although holding her own is more than they expected on Saturday or Tuesday morning.

myLot reputation of 95/100. plunketear (1294)  4 years ago

Keep in mind she is still suffering a grea tdeal of pain with her injuries, love, so I know from personal experience that pain will get you down. It wears on you, zaps your energy, and sometimes makes it hard to muster a smile.

The bowel movement could be it also (probably as you say) so the clear liquids may have something in it to help get her moving. Let's hope so. That's a drag to have to endure along with her other pain at this time.

I'm recalling the demeanor of a dog after a real good d*mp. Have you ever noticed that right after, their smile is so wide it looks like their face will separate, and there is a considerable extra boing in their bounce.

So this will help your Mom, and put that extra boing in her bounce.

Is the hospital food not too bad there? No doubt take-out on the way home will be tastier, but consider staying away from cheeses and stuff...of course you know why?
Does she eat cereal in the morning ? Or any time of day? I swear by Kelloggs Buds. Although the greedy buggers just upped the price on them.
