Everyone is saying that you need protein for growth. But in some of our food, especially in south India rice is the dominant food. This means we take more carbohydrates. This will help energize ourself but will not help in cell growth. Do you take rice? Do you avoid rice as it has carbohydrates?

Hi firend, i am from eastern part of India and it is West Bengal. Our main diet is rice. So there is no question of avoiding it. moreover, nobody takes rice alone. it is taken with dal, some vegetables and almost all people here is fond of dishes of fish. most are non-veg too. so there is enough scope to take protein with rice. those who are vegetarian, eat things made of dal, soyabin etc which are rich in protein and they also take milk. As I am non-veg, i do not avoid rice for being rich in carbohydrate rather i like it very much. happy new year..

Nope.. I will never avoid rice as it's my main source of carbohydrates and they are healthy.. I need lots of carbohydrates for my runs and workouts.. IF i dun have rice, i will replace them with bread instead.. hehe ^_^ BUt still, i will prefer rice as i'm able to eat them with other food and my body can absorb other types of minerals and vitamins too ^_^

Hi Sivanj, I can’t event think of avoiding the rice and as a South Indian I am depending more on rice. I have been eating rice in lunch and dinner and most probably I take a rice based food for breakfast. I know rice is not rich with protein but we are consuming rice with Sambhar (a south Indian curry) or dal curry. We are taking other kinds of dishes with rice. We are taking pulses and beans which is a good source of protein. So I think it may add the protein for the daily requirement.

I love rice. I don't think I could go without rice for more than 2 or 3 days. I am Asian, but I was born and raised in Hawaii. Rice is a huge part of our diet. We do not eat it alone, but it is the starch that is served with many of our food. I currently live in California and it's so difficult to find good rice in the restaurants here. I feel like I have to make my own rice at home and take it to the restaurant with me. I prefer Japanese rice. The places here seem to serve something similar to instant rice. Yuck!

i think i cant avoid eating rice as being a south Indian i hope non can avoid having rice at least once a day yes as you say rice gives you mostly carbohydrates but you dont just eat rice you have curries and mostly eat dal with it so dal supplements the protein content you require and moreover excess protein upsets the stomach so whatever you have with rice like dal and few curries balances your diet so dont worry about the diet

I am also from South Asian region and you are absolutely right because rice is very much favorite food here. I also love eating rice alot and there are many dishes of rice. Everything is necessary for a human body to stay active. If protein is required then carbohydrates are also required. All that matters is that you have to follow the following rule:- "Excess of everything is bad" You must have protein, carbohydrates, vitamins etc. all in suitable required amount in one day. Excess of anything will result in storage of fat on your stomach or other places of the body which looks bad.
