I just learned about a Japanese New Year shopping tradition called Fukubukuro where merchants at stores create grab bags of unknown items from their shop and sell them at 50% off their retail price. Seemed interesting to me though I didn't know if this was actual tradition or a commercial driven one.

We'd play games at around 10pm while waiting for the clock to strike 12midnight. Then a few second before it does, we do a countdown ourselves with relatives and guests. Then shout our heads off (since fireworks aren't allowed anymore) and just jump and dance! Afterwhich, we get to eat our midnight meal together, play games again and don't sleep till it's around morning time. Happy New Year Mylot!
