I've had a few days off work now and I am spoiled rotten. I have napped on and off which is not a usual luxery. I still feel kinda tired and my b/f tells me "You've gotten to much sleep." Now I've heard this before but never thought I'd experiance it. Do you think you can get TO much sleep? Have you ever?

No I do not believe that we can get too much sleep because our body will only allow us to sleep as much as we need to. In your case I suspect that what has happened Jen is that your body clock has gone out of sync, because of the naps that you have been taking. In fact your body is not used to these naps and so cannot handle them when it says that you should be getting the sleep that you normally would most nights. If for example you generally get say 7 hours sleep most nights but you are napping for just an hour, there is a shortfall on what the body expects. In fact when you get up after that nap, your body and brain are thinking "what about the other 6 hours that I need".
At one stage due to domestic problems with my ex-wife I did not sleep much and was suffering from mild depression. Of course I was always tired and when I saw the Doctor he told me that I had a "sleep debt". According to him this meant my body knew that it needed more rest/sleep but my brain was not allowing that to happen because of the depression. Does that make any sense to you?
The other thing is that when I am away from home, driving trucks interstate I generally only get a maximum of 5 hours sleep at a time. However when I pull into the depot or where I have to unload or be reloaded, once the paper work has been checked and unloading or reloading commenced I will go to the drivers lounge. I often take that time to have a nap and I do the same when I take my scheduled breaks which might last from 15 minutes to an hour or so.
Now when I am at home, i.e. not driving, I make sure that I stick to basically the same sleeping pattern. If I don't then when I go back to work my body clock is all out of kilter and I want to sleep when I should be driving. I do not and will not drive when I am tired because I enjoy living too much, so ensuring my body clock is "set right" is most important. So if I have to take a rest/sleep break when I should be driving, then it can upset my entire schedule and it takes a few days to get back into the routine once again.

Hi oldboy. It makes perfect sense. My clock is definately far from being in sync right now. This is one of the longest vacations I have all year and I have been taking full advantage of sleeping when I want and doing as I please. I usually get about 7 hours of straight sleep then I'm on two wheels the rest of the day, child running, cleaning, dinner, etc.,until bedtime that night.Out of sync is probably an understatement where I'm concerned after this past couple of weeks..not to mention a bit of unexpected company that stayed for a couple of days.I'm back to work as of today so maybe it won't be long I get back into the swing of things. Thanks for the advice about maintaining my routine.Next vacation I'm gonna take it.

Happy to be of some help Jen. You really did nothing different to what many of us do at one time or another and of course we "pay the penalty". In my case if I did when I was younger it was not much of a problem as I was truck driving in the local area and not interstate. That meant I worked less hours and also was not under pressure with regard to the delivery times.
Now that I am older (but not necessarily wiser), it is much more important that I do not allow my body clock to get out of sync. Not only do I have to consider the schedule I have for deliveries but driving for so long means fatigue can be a real problem. Then of course there is the risk to my own health and life as well as that of others who are on the road.
When your nexct holiday comes around make sure that you allow a week to get your body clock back into sync before you return to work. Good luck with being back at work and you will soon find that your sleeping pattern returns to what is best for you.

No I am not back home yet Jen. Just holed up for the night again but will be leaving fairly early in the morning and home before dark tomorrow night. These days when I have to stay overnight I try to make it at one of the depots and so I get on the internet is posible. I have to stop not because I am tired but because of the hours I am legally allowed to drive.
Thanks for the best response for this discussion and it is very much appreciated.

Hi Jen,
I've heard that too but I'm more inclined to think that maybe you have not been getting enough sleep prior to your days off. If that is the case, then your body is trying to catch up on the sleep it's been deprived of. If you have been putting in overtime at work and overtime at home, then just getting less than 8 hrs. of sleep at night for a while then relax and enjoy this time of recovery. Sometimes when you post a question like this, it's nice to give a lttle more back ground because then we are all guessing what might have happened.

Hi there!
Yeah. I have experienced that. There was a time when I sleep for twelve hours straight and when I woke up, I still feel tired and sleepy.

you know, that's one of my problems that i don't know how to solve. i always have too much sleep that makes my body to easily get tired and have uneasiness. i don't know what to because even if i tried to wake up after 8 hrs, my body feels weak and sleepy as if telling me to sleep more. i guess, its a malpractice on my side because when i was young, i tend to sleep longer than usual. i just hope there's someone who can give some advice on how to change the bad practices that i have.

Thank you savypat. I wish I had gotten just enough.lol. I have heard that excessive sleep is a sign of depression. That's a very good point to bring up. I think that if it didn't get better after I got back into the swing of things, for anyone,it would be best to ask a doctor about it. Thanks again.

I heard that to, but according to my boyfriend you can never get enough sleep. He sleeps at night gets up about 4am goes back to sleep about 6am and then takes a nap during the day. That's just to much sleeping for me.
