Last week my laptop started acting funny. I ran scans for Trojans and viruses but could find nothing. Now it times out on me. I can only go to one site and then when I try to go from that site to another one it tells me it is taking too long. I checked the info on my laptop and noticed this is happening every 3 minutes or so. I have to shut down and restart my laptop to get back on line. I really do need help to correct this problem. So all of you smart computer knowledge people please share your expertise on this subject. I will be so grateful for your input and help. How can I correct this problem?

You must check the running service and processes on your system. It would be helpful if you tell what type of internet connection you use and the method you connect, what hardware you use to connect to net, what OS, browser name and EXACT error message and Error Code if any. This will help to identify the problem to some extent. If you are familiar with the system processes, please check the processes list in the task manager. You may also need to enable or disable some services in also.

I am on cable, Super Road Runner Browser Firefox "The site is taking to long to respond" is the message I get. It says it has timed-out. Once that happens I can't even get back on-line. It's as if someone has set a time limit on how long I can be on-line.

You must Use latest virus and anti spyware definitions for scanning. You check the running processes and end the ones which are not necessary.(Do this only if you are familar with the processes and its file names). Or try disconnecting the cable, close the browsers and reconnect the cable and start the browser again. Try this one.

Hello kowgirl! Nice seeing you back on myLot. Uh. I have some questions: 1) Is the cable directly connected to the laptop? If so, did you try to talk to RR about their internet (possibly) being down? If no, does the computer the internet is directly hooked up work correctly? 2) Are you connected through wireless connection with the laptop? If so did you try to turn the router off, and reboot everything? That works sometimes. 3) Do you scan with the latest definitions for virus/spyware? Did that find anything? Did you make sure you have to latest drivers for your wireless router AND the latest Window Update for Windows? 4) If none of the above worked have you tried to use a different internet browser like Internet Explorer or Opera? Does it still give you the "time out" message? 5) As a last resort, restart the computer press F8 button continuously at the beginning to start the laptop in safe mode. I have XP (no vista) so the steps could be a little different... You want to go to the Programs then Accessories then System Tools...then you will be running the following a) Disk Cleanup select the appropriate drives, & b) Disk Defragmenter...sometimes these steps work. 6) You may have to use Hijack This (a small program also available on download.com) to scan your computer's register & post on a technical forum to see if there is any spyware appearing on your computer... OR if none of these suggestions work you may have to try to contact RR technical support and see what they say...or perhaps take the laptop in for repair...

You need two pieces of software... an anti-spyware program and a virus scanner and the great thing is you can get both legit for free. The anti-virus I recommend is either AVG or AVIRA (I am using Avira right now). The anti-spyware program I would recommend is AdAware 2008 You can get both these programs on Download.com You can get other pay programs that will do MORE for you like boot-time virus-scanning and the such and for that I would recommend Kaspary (forgive the spelling) DO NOT have two anti-virus programs running at the same time though... that is a no-no. It may take up to a whole 8 hours to do a full system scan (for me it takes over a day because I have 2TB [2000GB] of disk space to scan) Hope that helps you out! Thanks Zelo
