It makes for a nice seasonal article!
Do you have experience of places like this? I've heard of hotels with a residents bar with an Honesty box,but have never been in the position to use one..

Hi your link doesn't work but I think I get the gist. My good friend who is no longer with us had a cafenion and he regularly just used to go out for a couple of hours without locking the place up at all, whether customers were there or not, allowing people to help themselves to coffees, ouzo and wine. I vey much doubt that anyone tried to cheat him or their name would have become mud, they'd just hand over the cash when he decided to wander back.

Thea,I know you don't do links, but do You cut and paste the links when it's not hyperlinked in blue to take you right there? the story came up when I put the address into both explorer and firefox browsers..It's nice to find stories like this online happy here's the article (Daily Mail)
-------------------------------
Shopkeeper Tom Algie faced a dilemma over Christmas - how to give himself and his three staff time off but without letting down his customers.
So he came up with a solution to suit everyone: leaving the hardware store open with an honesty box.
He left a note telling shoppers who came in on Boxing Day to serve themselves and then leave their payment in the box he had rigged up. Perhaps astonishingly, his plan worked.
When Mr Algie, 47, returned at 4.15pm to close up, he was delighted to find the shop in Settle, North Yorkshire, had taken £187.66 - and two euros.
The father of two said: 'I didn't think twice about leaving the shop open. Settle is a lovely quiet rural town and there's never any trouble here. I put my faith in my customers and I wasn't disappointed.
'It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I just wanted to spend the holidays with my family but thought it would be quite nice to open up the shop.'
As well as the cash, Mr Algie also found some notes of thanks.
One read: 'Thanks Tom. This is why we moved to Settle. This shop would have been cleaned out in two-and-a-half minutes in Bolton.'
Another said: 'I've just come from the centre of Manchester. I forgot just how lovely Settle is. This has made my day.'
The honesty box - which he dubbed his newest member of staff - was made out of a funnel and plastic cereal box, and put behind the counter at his shop Practically Everything.

His note read: 'Yes, I have given everyone the day off, including me, so please choose the items you want and place the right money inside, Merry Christmas.'

Customers also left notes saying what goods they had bought and this, combined with a quick check of his stock, confirmed that Mr Algie's trust was not abused.
Instead of being behind the counter, the divorcee had spent the day with his son Joe, 23, and daughter Beth, 18,
He added: 'When I got back, I could only see one £5 note in the box and perhaps my faith in human nature was slightly shaken.

However, the long tube was stuffed with notes and change, and after a bit of vigorous shaking, the day's takings spilled out on to the kitchen table.'

The biggest amount was £17 for a set of three-step ladders.

Mr Algie, who saved the store from closure when he bought it six years ago, believes he was not short-changed as people put in a little extra if they did not have the right change.

No I neither do links or copy and paste, I much prefer to read a posters own take on an event in the news as do most people it seems. And I certainly wouldn't credit any credibility to anything in the Mail. But if someone else comes along at least they'll be able to see it at ease now. lol

I don't understand why you don't do links..Links are an integral part of internet usage..the hyperlink was one of the major innovations after the internet itself. The whole point of them is that if you find an article you'd like to share, you don't have to carry around a printed out copy of the thing with the parts you consider interesting highlighted to show people..you can give them the link and let them discover for themselves..copying and pasting the entire article so you can read it here is like Me saying "I enjoyed a good book I think You'd like" and You saying,"Well, get it for Me and READ it to Me!" They're not an evil plot to get control of your Computer.. I know mylot is about creating discussions, and it works out better for you by putting down more on a subject, but I don't want people turned off by wading through a page of rambling padding/ explanation from ME when a link to a picture or article shows everything..The link is part of the Opening statement of a discussion,I want the reader's opinion on the referenced item, not on a derivative statement of Mine that might not cover what you'd think was relevant on the linked page..I'd like You to see what I saw and get your reaction from it!

Ahh, but I might waste my time by opening something which I'm not interested in. A discussion if it is based on an article should have the relevant points discussed by the topic opener only, that is the basis for a discussion. I don't 100% never open them, in fact I opened one this morning where a poster posted something interesting and I then wanted to read further. But he put it in such a way that I did want to find out more. It turned out to be a video news clip.
If I was discussing something in the real world I woulnd't take an article along and say read this, nor a computer print out. At the same time quotes are very useful, just spare me the whole article. You're not going to convince me on this one I'm afraid, to me it is nothing more than regurgitating someone elses research and if we are interested in a subject we can all google around.

I find that most people on the whole will not open these links and the discussions which start with links have less response. And it is not because of the subject matter necessarily.
