Ok so I have a 6 year old son, we got him a dog for his 4th birthday and unlike most kids he takes care of her, her feeds her, lets her out when asked, he is a very responsible little pet owner. So my hubby and I then decided for christmas we would get him another pet my son loves animals all kinds. So we got hermit crabs. I dont know how many people own these animals, but they are a little creepy looking but in a so ugly there cute way. They do require alot on set up of thier crabitat and there is alot more to them then we originally thought but all in all my son loves them and what we like the most is none of his freinds own them and when ever we have coompany they are all fascinated by them. Although we have not owned then very long I reccomend people to check them out if you like those unusally animals. Does anybody else own any hermit crabs

Hermit crabs are nocturnal, you can hear them moving around at night. They need more space than those little plastic habitats the pet stores are always trying to sell people, more like at least a 20L aquarium. They like to climb, they need to be warm (heat mats), they need good food (fresh fruit). They should not be considered impluse buys, too many are sold to people who can not or will not provide proper care. This is one of those animals where the cost of care will greatly outweigh the cost of the animal, but that does not make them disposable. Please fully research the needs of hermit crabs before buying and make an informed decision about whether or not you are willing to provide proper care. If their needs are met, however, I think you will find them to be quite charming little creatures!

Hello and thanks for the response. I know those pet stores are horrible, actually i did buy my first crab as an impulse by at christmas for my son from the flea market in Pickering. The guy who was running the booth selling them, and they only sold hermmit crabs by the way. made it all sound so easy and sent us away with a plastic tank a bag of hermit crab food some sand and a hut and one little crab. So i got home and starting doing my research and was amazed that my little guy lasted so long. So they i had to find the money which I didnt really have to spend and went and got a heat pad, more toys and things to climb. I started feeding them real food as well as the hermit crab food, i bought the one hermit crab a freind after i relized that that are sociable and should not be kept alone We also upgraded to a 30 gallon aquarium. We bought the humidity gauge more sand, salt the water and I got them set up propely. I dont regret buying my crabs we all love them they are great! However i do wish that i would have been properly informed when i purchased the animal, because alot of people wont research and then thier crab will die. It's not fair to sell the crabs if your going to lie they dont dont deserve to be treated like this. Thanks for the comment and you brought up alot of good information

I applaud you for actually researching the animal! I think that is a rare thing these days, and that is sad. I think everyone should commit to providing the best possible care for the animals they keep, afterall, the animals dont have a choice of whose home they go to.
