I just sat down at the computer and read the early news that Andrew Wyeth passed away overnight. He was 91 years old and died in his sleep. It's not clear whether he died in Chadds Ford, Pennsyslvania or in Maine.
Certainly, this is the best death anyone can hope for and he lived a full life but I still feel as if I were hit with a ton of bricks.
I live midway between Philadelphia and Wyeth's Brandywine Valley. This whole area is "Wyeth Country" and he has always been a powerful presence here. Like every other little girl in the area, I grew up with a print of "Christina's World" on my bedroom wall. I can remember spending hours as a child tracing prints from a book on Wyeth trying to learn to draw human hair the way he did. (Of course, I never came close)
The Chadds Ford master will be sorely missed in these parts and America has lost a giant.
Anyone care to share their thoughts on Andrew Wyeth?
